Need help creating a lag switch

Kind of afraid to ask this question, but I'm not sure where else I can go.

I'm currently trying to assemble a lag switch for my PS3. I've gone through a couple guides online, and while they make sense, they all require you to place the lag switch directly beside your ethernet cable. What I'd like instead is to have the switch right on my controller so it's way more accessible.

I've tried a whole number of techniques to get this button working—everything from using a reed switch button to simply taping the circuit directly to my controller—but I'm a total hardware noob and don't want to irreversibly damage my setup.

Is anyone knowledgeable in this area? (Err, with electronics, not cheating.) I'd be really grateful for some help. Or should I just cave in and buy an expensive modded controller?

And before you ask, no, I don't plan to abuse the thing. It's mostly for pranks against some of my friends in private matches (everyone knows how obvious laghacking looks to other players).
