I need some advice on setting up 2 boxes for my office. the main use will be MS office and net browsing. What type of hardware would you guys suggest? I also want it to be usable for the next year or so. My current config is as follows.

AMD 2800xp retail
abit nf7
2x256 geil 3200
lite-on cd-rom
mitsumi floppy drive
gigabyte geforce 4 mx 8x agp
120gig WD 8mb
some cheapo case with an el cheapo powmax 400watt psu
4 speeze case fans

ViewSonic P95F+B 19"
HITACHI CML175SXW2B 17"

I'm not going to overclock these boxes as i need them to stay as quiet as possible. So i will only use 2 80mm fans to cool it. what do you guys think about that config? the total for both systems with a ms kb/mouse combo comes out to around $1,630 shipped.

For an office machine I think an 2800 with 512MB of RAM is overkill. You could easily get by with 1 gig duron and 256 of RAM. Newegg has 1.4 Durons for CHEAP. Also I would bypass the nf7 with the geforce4. Newegg has the Biostar M7VIZ for CHEAP. It has onboard everything and for an office box, I think intergrated mobos are king. Very stable boxes.

Biostar M7VIZ (very stable fast boards [I use them all the time in builds and have three myself for my servers])
1.4 gig duron
256 Crucial
mitsumi floppy
cdrom of choice
120 Harddrive (will these office machines use a 120 gigs)
17" monitor (I like Viewsonic and Samsung)

Easy there turbo, your office rigs sound more like enthusiast rigs, and they're just for office and browsing the web, which a P1 or P2 could do no sweat.

But Private Citizen's is basically the way to go. The Durons and lower rated Athlons are incredibly affordable, and do you really need a video card like the geforce 4 mx for an office machine?

For office machines for those purposes, what you're building is an unnecessary waste of money.

Quoted for truth. What YOU want in a system > what you need to be productive.

I hear ya guys, i thought the same thing... it's just that i worked tech support for a company and we used web based applications and such.. things always felt slow and what not. Alas, i will probably go with the biostar and a 1700xp. thx for your comments. they are much appreciated.

I have 2 amd 233 machines and a P3 1ghz as the network server

My 1 ghz Sony lappy rounds it out. Everything is ducky at the office. Save your money for your next vid card on the home rig and build a couple of durons like the man said

PS integrated video is fine unless your going dual head. Matrox is my choice at the office

...if you're doing any kind of CAD, "more" is better, to be sure......:D

FWIW - B.B.S.

Whoole dif story but he said MS office and internet

use the type of sytems the others are talking about and go to the larger moniter, then set the type size that is easy to read. your eyes will thank you for it. ;)

smaller sytems also do not need alot of fans to keep cool and that cuts down on noise.

If you want any form of enthusiast product, the nforce2 igp is good grapihcs.

I would personally get teh older shuttle's w/ 8mb integrated video, before they were performance machines, they can be found cheap on the egg.

120 gigs? you really need that much for an office pc? from my experience, the things that take up the most space on a hd is games and movies. i think you could tone it down to 60 gigs or even 40 to save some cash.
