Ok guys...i dont no shit about computers nevermind the different parts. I just got some money and been looking into buying a computer and decided to build one because my friend said i can build a better one for 500$ instead of buying one pre built.

The only things i will be using this computer for is web browsing and maybe capturing video, like making montages or live streaming. I willl NOT be gaming on it because im a console gamer.

I'v been using my moms computer for the last 6 years and to me its pretty fast for web browsing, because its the only comp i pretty much ever used lol. (the specs are probly terrible)

here are the specs...

OS: windows XP home edition
System model: dimension 3000
Processor: intel pentium 4 CPU 2.80 GHz
Memory: 510MB RAM
Chipset: i865P/PE/G/i848P
Intel 82865G Graphics Controller

I didnt know where to post this thread but i did it here because there were 270 viewers.

So "computer experts" please help me out! any help is appreciated. THANKS! =)

Thanks guys...i posted this in the graphic card section by accident before and a few people said i should get a laptop. should i get that or just stick with a regular computer?

No. If you're not gaming then stick with the onboard graphics. That HP Quad Build I mentioned earlier comes with the AMD Radeon 4200 graphics. This is a very good onboard graphics that has full 1080P support and has better 3D performance over the Intel GMA X4500 integrated graphics.

A pre-built is a good idea if: you don't like building and/or don't have the time to build; need a monitor and OS; have no special needs.

I agree, for what you listed, a pre-built is your best option for your budget. Check the deal sites, like gotapex.com and slickdeals.net, for deals on prebuilts. The typical Dell Vostro 220 deal is a Core2Duo 2.2Ghz+, 2GB - 4GB of RAM, 160GB - 500GB HDD, 18" - 22" LCD, 1yr warranty, onboard GMA X4500HD, typically ranging from $390 - $450, plus tax and shipping. It also comes with a 305W PSU, which is perfectly capable of handling an additional HDD upgrade as well as a vidcard upgrade to something like a 9600GT or GT240 (basically something without a PCI-E power connector). You can use that as a baseline for whatever current deals are running.

Also, if you live near a Fry's and/or Microcenter, you could build one for around the same price with combo deals (and sometimes via Newegg combos, but usually need Fry's combos, as the mobos are typically "free," so to speak).

You probably already have a monitor? Dell Outlet. Some pretty hot deals, year warranty straight through Dell.

Filter the results based on something like the "Studio - 540" model.

These all meet your budget and would be HUGE upgrades.

The above linked Dell's would be a higher quality computer, and blow the pants off a self-built like this.

Pre-builts are the better buy almost 100% of the time for non-gamers. If your looking for just something to surf the web, do desktop work related stuff. Dell/HP etc. Much less headache and worry too. *IF* something broke, you'd only have one point of contact for warranty work too.

Do you need a monitor?
Safe? sure, why not? I'd go shopping for a better brand new deal, though, instead of a refurb. :p
Do you need a monitor?

enginurd....nope dont need a monitor, i'll be buying a 24 inch 1080p monitor soon. also my moms boy friend might become the manager at a microcenters so i might take a look there too.
