Need advice on overclocking

I have a Pentium 4 Northwood and its revision D1. I also have 2 gigs of Corsair XMS Ram, there dual channel 1 gig sticks. I also have a MSI 865Neo-2 PE motherboard and was wondering what are the steps on overclocking this? I have pretty good cooling in my computer and how do i drop my multiplier down? In CPU-Z it reads as my multiplier as x17.0. I tried just bumping up the FSB to 215 and it crashed after awhile. It seems odd to me that my 3.4 northwood can't even hit 3.6, im sad but also when i upped the fsb i didnt touch the voltage or anything else, can anyone give me advice please? Thanks in advance!
 
Anyone able to help? By the way the CPU Ratio is on locked with my motherboard and I cannot change it...:-/ I dont know what to do!?!?!?! Please help
 
Just thought I'd throw something out for you since there were no replies....didn't want to walk away feeling guilty for not responding :p

I think you are new at overclocking from waht I gather from your approach.

1)Not all Pentium 4 chips have unlocked multipliers. Therefore unless you have a specialized chip not regularly available the BIOS is only going to show that it is locked & you will not be able to change it period.

2)Is your Pentium 4 a northwood processor that uses a 533FSB? or a newer Prescott chip that uses 800FSB? If it is an 800FSB chip than running @215 assuming your memory can handle it should be fine but I think there is no way without serious overclocking experience & equipment that you will get a 533FSB(133) up to 860FSB(215)

Edit: noticed you stated already Northwood 3.4GHz, I dont honestly remember but I guess that's the 800FSB version? Someone help him out here...
 
His is a HT 800MHz FSB CPU

3.4Ghz=3400MHz=200x17

IMHO just upping the FSB and no other tweaks usually won't make it past about 5-10% OC. 215 is a bit steep for a starting point..

Not knowing your cooling, voltages, CAS timings (ram), I find it's hard to advise anything beyond right round 210. It sounds like you have good ram and a good CPU, but I'd like a few more details before I can give some real help.

Northies (unless etched INTEL CONFIDENTIAL ENGINEERING SAMPLE) cannot change multipliers as far as I know

Well my memory timings are at stock which is 3-3-3-8 and so if my multipliers are locked there is no way I can overclock it? I just want to hit 3.6 from 3.4, being a Northwood I thought it would easily be possible...any other suggestions?
 
I just want to know if I am able to do anything with this processor? :(

By the way mu voltages are all at stock.
 
Drop ram-speed ratio to 5/4
add voltage to CPU (should be safe up to 1.675)
enable pci/agp lock at 66/33
increase FSB 10MHz at a time, running prime95 to check for stability.
have fun.
 
Not sure where it is or what its called on your mobo. Look for something that says "1:1" or some crap. then change it. just bring your ram speed down to rule it out as you overclocking weak spot.
