i am building a new comp and want to o/c, just got a watercooling kit to so heat will not be a problem.

my new setup:

ic7-max3
3.0c
1gig pc4400 xms

i would like to get a good o/c so what do you guys recommend?

anybody

should i lower the cpu to a 2.8c or lower my ram to pc4000 or pc4200.

Just get an athlon sys, athlon 64 3400+ or the FX 53 or 51 if you have the money to burn they don't OC well but hell at stock it can beat intel. I'm not bashing intel or something like that, I still love my 3.2 Intel. But if I were you I'll wait till PCI express comes out.

Screw the whole Athlon thing. If you are interested in OC'ing for the sake of OC'ing the 3.0 may not be the best chip to start with. However you should be able to get at least 3.4GHz out of it if you got lucky with the CPU.

Overclocking is as much luck of the draw as it is skill. As far as memory you will definatley need to go with something faster than PC3200 if you want to have the overhead needed to conquer the 200MHz FSB. You need something that will do 250MHz no problem. PC4000+ should do the trick.

Have you already purchased the parts or are you going to purchase them?

no i am ordering them tomorrow so i am just making sure i am getting a kick ass system. i am also wondering would i get a better o/c if i dropped to 2.8c?

alright....

apparantly not a lot of people on the [H] know about the new stepping 3.0c chip....the sl6wu. I have not seen a single one of these chips (and I have seen a lot) that will not do 3.75ghz stock voltage. I have even seen one do 3.9ghz stock voltage and 4.0ghz 1.6volts with stock cooler. I just sold my 2.4c@3.7ghz to get one of these. Now get the Ic7-max3 to get the vdimm options....get mushkin pc3500lvl2 black ram (bh-5) and the 3.0c from excaliberpc (they have the new stepping in stock).

If you do so and put the ram to 3.2vdimm which wont even come close to hurting it you will have a system as follows

3.0c @ 3.75ghz 250FSP
500mhz 2-2-2-5 Mushkin lvl2 black
Abit IC7 max3

Thats the fastest system on air today. You might even get lucky and get a 3.0c that hits 3.9-4.0ghz....if you don't believe me about the overclocking of tehse chips, look at www.xtremesystems.org/forums and find the thread entitled "3.0 NOrthwood overclocking" or something like that.
