I decided to dip into my overdraft and get myself a new rig so far i have planned a 64bit 4000+ AMD with 2gb of ram for the main system but i need a good video card to go with it.

Im definatly going with Nvidia, a 7800 card is what im aiming for, which i can use in SLI in maybe 8-10 months time when i can afford another one.

The 7800 GT's look good, and are selling for around £250 inc VAT, but the GTX is tempting at around £340 with VAT.

Now with my current card (LeadTek 6800 GT) it clocks to ultra speeds and past, if I can get the same kind of overclocks from the 7800 GT to closer to 7800 GTX then I would definatly go for the GT.

So some questions :)

1) What does the 7800 GT overclock like?
2) Can you unlock its 20 pipes to 24 like the GTX
3) Is there anything between the GT and GTX, the GTX seems a lot more powerful (compared to the difference between the 6800 GT and Ultra)
4) Does anyone know of any decent benchmarks including both the 6800 Range and the 7800 Range

Any extra info welcome, thanks.

Well, i have some damn good advice for you,
DONT GO INTO THE OVERDRAFT.

Its probably the stupidest thing you can do, banks just love to rape people for doing it, smart thing to do is go to a bank or local credit union, and get a small personal loan, say 500$ or more.

Now since your happy to go into overdraft it means you must have money coming in to repay it, so getting a loan is better, and the interest rate on a loan is much lower then an overdraft.
Also by taking out a loan and repaying it your credit rating goes UP, so bonus too ;)

Im not bothered about interest over 2-3 months, its not a great deal.

I've also found an anandtech 7800 GT overclocking article, seems good so far will report back once im done reading.

*edit*

it looks like you can narrow the gap between the 7800 GT and the 7800 GTX quite a lot with overclock alone (not unlocking pipe - i dont even know if this is possible?)

Just like my 6800 GT I dont think i can justify spending money on the more expensive card when essentially they're the same hardware clocked differently, even without being able to unlock the pipes im still gonna go for a 7800 GT.

Obviously being able to unlock the pipes is a bouns, does anyone have any info on this? As i understand it the cards extra pipes might not actually work (which is why its been set to be used as a GT) if its possible to unlock pipes would it possibly break the card?

Any info on unlocking the pipes would be apreciated, cheers :)

well so far no one has mentioned that they are able to unlock any pipe, the new 512mb GTX seems very impressive, but no you cam't unlock any pipes on the GT.

Guys I have decided to go for the 7800 GTX

However I want to try and stick to well known and trusted brands, I like Asus and my newest card is Leadtek.

So i found a decent LeadTek 7800 GTX for around £340, but at the same place theres a deal on BFG 7800 GTX OC which runs at higher speeds factory set which is going for £335

It sounds like a good card but can I really trust BFG? it comes with a lifetime warrenty though.

*edit Number 2*

Stock speeds for the LeadTek GTX are 430/1200 (450/1250MHz)
Stock speeds for the BFG GTX OC are 460/1300

I checked the leadtek site and they have an updated speed at which is guranteed (450/1250) it seems like its probably going to run at the BFG speeds with ease)

Still not sure though :/
