Need a cooler SFF

Ok 3 years ago i built my mom a Shuttle SFF 3 years ago, I dont remember the model number but it has a 3ghz Celeron 250gb HDD 1GB DDR and a DVD burner and some kind of ATI integrated GFX.

Anyways mom has a new house, and works out of her study. To keep the tech hidden, I wall mounted a 22" LCD and the cabinets are built to hold a SFF case. The cabinet has one small fan to vent it but the case still gets very hot (65 C) I was wondering if building a newer 45w amd or 35w Celeron 430 would cut down on the heat much inside this cabinet or if I am going to have to cut more holes.
 
You will need an entirely new build to accommodate the new LGA775 Celerons. Is the cabinet the one getting hot or the CPU? Assuming cabinet then you need to engineer it a bit better. As I see, it's a closed space with 1 fan venting hot air from inside with no way for cool air to enter.
 
well there is a way for air to enter through the bottom of the cabinet. The CPU is at 61C so that is pretty hot even for the old P4 cores, Also the whole inside of the cabinet is hot, but I am not getting any errors or crashes from it yet, so im assuming its withing tolerance. I guess my question is, HOw much cooler would a 35w chip board be compared to this, or would I need to use an Atom chip to make a real dent in the heat.
 
The thing about technology is that while today we typify 65/45W parts as the energy efficient versions, the hardware in use a few years ago used less power :rolleyes: Remember your CPU is only part of the equation here; do you have anyway to estimate the power consumption of the unit? A kil-a-watt perhaps? Only by knowing the platform's usage can we make a recommendation for replacement.
 
There has to a be a way for new, cooler air to enter into the system to minimize heat. If your just pumping air out with no way of allowing the system to pulling fresh air, you create a negative pressure balance and your system starves for air and overheats. What CFM and size is your fan? A dwinky little 80mm isn't gonna move enough air passively to cool the setup unless you introduce a 80mm intake fan to help push new air in and move hot air out or enlarge the exhaust fan to say, 120mm.

@OP, open the cabinet up entirely and see what dif it makes. I doubt 1 hole will cut it and since you have no pics, it's even hard to tell how it looks like and functions. btw, your chip is probably a Celeron D. Can't find much about temps but I doubt a new system will drastically change temps.

I wish I had took some pics before i left town last time. I only have 1 80mm fan in the back venting it to answer the question. Anybody have a good suggestion as to what would make a nice clean fan grille for say 2x 120mm fan on the back side of the cabinet. I also put some rubber stops on the door to allow air to enter from the front (about 8mm gap).

Good logic is leading this discussion to another forum, cabinet mods.
 
A buddy of mine has an Athlon X2 4850e (a pretty quick processor) in an SG03 with 4GB of RAM and a 320GB hard drive, using the stock cooler. It is in a cabinet not much larger than the case itself, and even with the door shut, he gets temps of about 30 C.

This is good info, was this his case temp w/ the door closed? I have no problem using a 2.5" hdd as well if it will produce significantly less amounts of heat.

FFS. While completely disagreeing and posting relevent, but not perfect links, you completely missed the point of my post. Of course it's a Celeron D (340 series) Good job.

With the door closed it only raised marginally, still well within limits, at like 35C.

I don't think you'll see too much of a benefit using a 2.5" hard drive unless it's a slower 5400rpm unit, if you really wanted you could get a 1.8" hard drive that they use in iPods and some netbooks lol.

I don't know about the 4850e, but my 4050e gets temps that are below ambient idle, which are definitely inaccurate. That might be Linux, however (I'm using lm-sensors)

What's the motherboard's sensor saying?

Your point of your post was "Older hardware use less power" which is complete BS. Good job. Celeron D wasn't directed @ you.

About the same. I don't remember it was a while ago that I saw it. I remember it was pretty low, however, which kinda makes sense as they seem to be fairly low power processors.
 
4850e is made for low power HTPCs - you'll find the 4850e paired with the Gigabyte MA78GM-S2H board at avsforums for almost everyone who has the board.. you'd think they almost seem made for each other [there].
 
It performs pretty decently. Definitely not as fast as my Q9300 but if all you want to do is basic stuff, watch movies, surf the web, things like that, hell it'll do just fine. I wouldn't mind using that processor myself if temperature or noise or anything like that was an issue.
 
Point of it is obv. for low powered stuff, aimed at the HTPC market and not for high performance. This is where Intel lags far behind/doesn't touch.

Yeah, why I'm running an 4050e in my HTPC/Fileserver on a GA-MA78GM-S2H.

They do fit the purpose of HTPC's quite nicely.
