need a bootable HDD testing util

I have a bunch of hard drives that I don't know the true status of. Is there a good util out there that I can just boot to and test the hardrives for physical damage. Some bioses have this built in and it is handy. keeps me from having to install an OS to find out the status of the drive.
 
I think you can get diag disks from most hard drive vendors. I have some programs but they were expensive.
 
You can actually download each companys utilitys and make your own disks. It's a bit quicker that way.

Yea thats what I ment. They should be on the website for download or you may have to email them for it but most are on the website.

demo could be added to either the UBCD, through Bart's PE Builder
given a little research Im sure nearly the same level of diagnostics could be assembled for a Knoppix distro if they havent been already
