Hey [H],

I'm currently using a piece of shit 17" CRT and can't take it anymore!

I'd like to purchase 3 monitors for an eyefinity setup, capable of running 1900x1200 resolution each. I've been looking around newegg/amazon, but I really don't know whats good.

The cheaper the better. . .I am currently considering this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824113019

Anyone got anything they can add/share as to what they use for their own eyefinity setup?

Thanks!

you have the HD 5870 or whatever else I would assume?

I'd probably not look at the FHD2401 for Eyefinity, mostly because of its input options and bezel (it doesn't have DP and the bezel is gloss black)

look for something with a slimmer figure, like some of the Dell Ultrasharps or Hanns-G monitors (3x27.5" would be ridiculous and probably work out just fine, but it'd be huge)

Yup - using a XFX 5770.

Slim bezel would be nice, but its not a big deal to me....I only care about resolution, not actual monitor size to save desk space :p

well, its somewhat inter-related, pixel pitch/density will influence the resolution's "impact", and if the bezels distract from the image (I'm trying to curve you away from the glossy bezels because they'll reflect each other and it'll be incredibly distracting) it will reduce immersion (which is sort of the point of multi-head gaming)

if you just want to be immersed in the game, a trio of 25-28" 1200p displays would be a nice setup, if it fits on the desk

Hmm!

I've actually had to stop gaming as my work @ home situation has become far too demanding now. I'm mostly wanting the 3 displays to have A LOT of shit open for monitoring logs and such.....Can I buy the vertical ones? Or, do they all just swivel that way? =P

I use a lot of excel/power point, 3-4 text editors open, 7-8 puTTY terminals, skype, msn, firefox, usual stuff people have open. Looking mostly something that can offer me a seamless transition between screens, with limited movement on my part!

Thanks for the tip about the glossy ones, didn't even think of it!

no idea about glossy monitors, I just know that with my Gateway and its glossy bezel, adding more monitors around it is....interesting (you'll catch reflections on the bezel and it can be distracting depending on what the other monitors are showing)

as far as "Vertical", do you mean like this:

the 3x1 Portrait?

yeah thats just rotating the monitors 90* and then rotating them in software (so Windows/whatever sees them as 1200x1920, not 1920x1200)

either get monitors that can rotate or be rotated on their stands, or buy a stand that'll support it (Ergotron makes some nice stuff, gets expensive though)

I'd be tempted to go for 1920x1080 displays.

A lot of fixed ratio media is 16:9 ratio (because of the consoles) and in Eyefinity you'll get little 1 inch overlaps onto the side monitors if you use 16:10 displays. It looks really bad but wouldn't occur with 16:9 displays as the video cutscenes or whatever you're watching would just fit the centre screen perfectly.

It's not something you ever notice with just one screen because they just add little black bars at the top and bottom but watch some Eyefinity videos on youtube and you'll see all the 16:10 setups have this horrible stretch effect on any pre-recorded video elements in games.

Food for thought anyway. It's not something that's likely to get fixed in a hurry either, if ever and I know it would annoy the hell out of me.

EDIT: Example here: 40 seconds in, the Nvidia splash video, then 1:40 in with the loading screen and the initial opening cutscene. (and all other cutscenes within the game presumably)
