I'm looking to turn an old box into a NAS. it's a 3800+ with a gig of ram using the k8nxp-sli mobo. the mobo can hold 12 or 16 drives (can't remember) and thus my hankering to use it.

now with this much power i'm looking to run it as a folding box as well. I was looking at freenas, but was wondering what else i could use. perhaps you guys know of some other linux distros that will work well for my uses?
 
what other distros would work for nas? ubuntu? does it have the tools for software raid and how friendly are they? (i've heard of the problems with nvraid and linux as well as the sil controller)
 
I really don't think that there is a huge difference when it comes to distros and basic things like samba and EVMS. I tried out debian with U_M's guidance and it worked pretty well for me, the linux noob.
 
i'm starting to look at selling my old system and bilding a new system better suited to file serving. like getting an actual real raid card. i was thinking sempron 64, 3ware card, and 4*500 gigs in raid 5. get me 1.5 tb. i'd still have a lot of power in it, so i might webserve and fold with it as well. the main reason for so much power is that i'd want gigabit. transfering 100s of gigs at 100 megs is SLOW.

another question, can i map drives on a windows box to a samba share? that's my ultimate plan is to have a music network drive, a videos network drive, an isos network drive, and a misc drive.

The express purpose of samba is to be able to "talk" with windows file and print sharing. You can do mount both ways with windows as a client or server.

If you are doing an all *nix network, or get some of the windows compatability stuff I know they have for the server versions, people use NFS instead.
 
Skip the 3ware. An Areca is only a little more, and they're a good deal faster and better supported in Linux (amazingly - the 3ware used to be the gold standard!). I would suggest doing a Debian install; the unipurpose distros are not easy to deal with when you decide you want to do other things. EVMS will simplify your life when it comes to managing disks, Shorewall makes doing firewall duty fairly simple, and apt is a godsend in general.

 
i'll leave m0n0wall for doing firewall duties, love that setup. not sure what evms is. another question. is there any good widget style montoring software for linux/windows? i.e. if i wanted to monitor a linux box from a windows box with a widget/desklet on my windows desktop
