Is there such a thing as a NAS which would be able to act as a USB2 HDD at the same time as being a NAS?
 
At the same time? No, and I'd be very suspicious of anything that claims to act this way. NTFS isn't a clustered FS; it doesn't deal with multiple initiators accessing it at once. So if someone reads a file over USB and writes to it at the same time over LAN, it breaks.

What's the usage for this? If you want to have a USB-attached (and removable) drive shared over network, plug it in and use Windows to share it.
 
The reason I need a NAS is that I need the storage to be active even if the host computer's off. The reason I need an external hard disk is that writing to a NAS even over gigabit doesn't seem to result in spectacular throughout these days. And the reason I would really like those in one box is that I don't want to have to keep re-synchronising my data to a slow NAS. And the reason I want a NAS is that you can get fanless ones.

That was the train of my thought at least. I guess I don't really have much choice than to put together a passively cooled Win2003 or Linux rig really for acceptable network throughput storage systems with silence, do I?
