I've narrowed my decision down to a couple different PSU's.
Fortron BlueStorm 500w

Enermax EG475P-VE SFMA Noisetaker 470W
Enermax EG465P-VE FCA 460W
Antec TruePower True430

this wasn't really on my list but what the hell right?
Enermax EG425P-VE-SFMA Noisetaker 420W
Sparkle Power FSP400-60PNU-B 400 Watts

anyway...I'm really leaning toward either the Enermax 475 or the Fortron BlueStorm 500. I'll be pairing it with a DFI Ultra-D, A64 3200+ (will overclock), ATI x800XL, 1gb ram, DVD burner, CDRW, 160gb SATA drive, and some USB devices (scanner - bus powered, mouse/kb, digicam).

I don't really need the 500w, or really the 475 for that matter. So would the 425 or 400w fortron/sparkle fit the bill? I'm trying to stay below $90 for now.

bumparoo :)
ordering on Saturday...leaning toward the enermax 475...
steer me in the right direction please

dang...that's cool :D

Are OCZ powerstreams considered better than Enermax's? I noticed a few reviews that said that the Enermax's just shut off when they hit max load...which I'll probably never reach.

wow...checked OCZ's website and it looks really good on paper...I may just jump on that one. Thanks for the linkage! ;)

:EDIT: googled up some reviews and I'll be ordering that one tomorrow :D

umm...why? According to the reviews I read on the Fortron, It's actually a 460w PSU (however, it's a conservative rating according to the reviews) and will only supply up to 75w on the PCI-E.

Does anyone know if the OCZ will supply the full 150w on the PCI-E?

The OCZ does have some nice features, beefy rails, excellent reviews, and is the same price as the Fortron. However, the Fortron seems to have dual 12v rails and a higher efficiency....

I'll probably be very happy with either though...

Im very happy with my Truepower 430.....but OCZ and Fortron are my next choices.

Why not the OCZ PowerStream 420W, adjustable rails, 1% - 2% regulation, 5yr warranty & that GREAT OCZ customer service.

$87: http://www.directron.com/ocz420adj.html

;) :)

3% Topower P6 series supplies (which the Powerstreams are w\ an options package) list 3%
and real testing has not borne out the vaunted OCZ claims of 1% load regulation across all the rails,
nor have they ever clarified what was being measured to come up with their AC Ripple figure
if it just the leads with the ferrite toroids or the supply as a whole

however I too would recommend it
especially considering the stated goal of overclocking
youd want tighter than spec load regulation and AC Ripple
which isnt the Fortron, damn nice supply but just basic spec compliance

the OCZ is rated at 40C like the PCP&C Turbo Cools
but dont mistake the claimed OCZ figures as an equivilant to the Turbo Cools
they simply arent

most other supplies will need to be derated for temperature, the Fortrons are also rated at a fairly high but undocumented temperature, as they historically do very well in capacity tests, you can read a bit more about the Blue Storm at the top of the forum

where you should also review the How to buy a PSU thread

here is a head start
http://takaman.jp/D/?M=PbQDQbdHhSCSkiH3kG5H5YAZAZavXCMZ&english

yeah, already read those threads. But extra input is always nice to have.

well each forum seems to have it own take on PSUs
with a slightly different focus
in here its more upgrade path and overclocking
so capacity and power quality

guess Id ask how seriously are you going to pursue overclocking?

There is no question that PC P&C is the BEST!

However the OCZ PowerStreams are also excellent PS's in the 420W for $87 & 520W for $140 versions.

The OCZ PowerStream 600W, while an excellent ATX12 V2.0 with dual +12V rails, is priced at $210,
it is just too close in price to the PC P&C 510 series, making the PC P&C the best choice for a $200+ PC PS.

;) :)
