Ok....I have an HP 522c microATX system with a gig of ram, and a eGeforce 6200 graphics card. I had issues with the power supply not being big enough for the graphics, so I decided to install my entire system in an ATX case with 300watt ATX supply. I got it all installed and then the system wouldn't boot. I just got the blue "HP" screen, then nothing, or sometimes it would just be a white cursor flashing in the corner.
I double, triple and quadruple checked all the connectors and everything was connected correctly. I installed everything back into the HP case and it booted up just fine with no issues.
Are ATX supplies not compatible with microATX boards?

Yes, a regular ATX power supply should work fine with your board.

What brand power supply was it, and did it come with the case?

As a general rule any PSU that's included when you purchase a case is going to be CRAP and you'll be taking a big risk even connecting such a PSU to your hardware. There are some exceptions to that rule, but very very few. It's likely that the PSU that came with your HP is better quality than the one that came with your new case.

You're lucky your components didn't go 'poof' - once you let the magic smoke out it's really hard to get it all back in. :)

A few PSU suggestions:

Corsair 450VX (Can be had for around $50 if you look hard enough)
Antec Earthwatts or Basiq
Any of the 300w and up offerings from FSP/Sparkle would do you nicely as well
