n00b PSU question

After running PC Wizard for some other troubleshooting I was doing, I noticed that my 12V line on my current PSU (Enermax EG701AX VE(W) SFMA Noisetaker II Version 2.2 600W Power Supply) was only outputting about 11.42V. Does this mean I should replace the power supply?

I recently had a 7800GTX video card completely die on me all of a sudden, and I had to replace it. Would the 12V issue had something to do with it?

It means you shouldn't be using PC Wizard or any other software to monitor voltages. ;)

Use a DMM to check PSU voltages if you have PSU concerns.

I called BFG Tech support in order to RMA my card after it died, and the tech instructed me to download PC Wizard in order to check the voltages. 3.3V and 5V rails are all fine and are at or slightly above 3.3V / 5V. He was concerned with how low the 12V rail was, however.

But, if you're saying that programs like PC Wizard can't be trusted to monitor these voltages, I'll look into using a DMM.

What do the voltages show in the BIOS? It is usually a more accurate measure.

really? i was always under the impression that the programs read voltages from the BIOS.. ;)

Not quite. Those poor folks have to deal with the lowest common denominator on a regular basis. I don't think it's wise to have them start suggesting people whip out a DMM. Although I am writing an FAQ that will include how to use a DMM to test voltages.

Same chip. Same reading. The only difference may be the algorithm used to determine the voltage from the data collected. Either way, it's not often accurate.
