n00b ? about switching Raid Controllers

I have a raid 0 array using a pair of 160GB IDE Maxtors that were running off of my motherboard's integrated Highpoint controller.

My question is this: Can I use that same raid 0 array on another manufacturer's controller (i.e. Promise or some other type of cheap knockoff) and not loose the data I have on the array? Is there a risk involved, or should I just find a highpoint ata133 pci controller card and put the array on that? I am between mobo's right now, and I have 300 Gigs of pr0n just a wastin.

There may be metadata on your array that means it will only work on another HighPoint controller, and may only work on another controller that is the exact same. BACKUP before you try anything...and don't use RAID-0 next time.
 
Wow, Thanks, That was totally not the answer I was looking for, but I do appreciate it just the same.
 
I would tell you to backup even if you were moving a fault tolerant RAID such as 1 or 5. There are too many things that can go wrong when you change controllers.

As for not using RAID-0, use two independent drives, and mount one as a subfolder of the other. That way you can separate them or move them to a new system without this problem.
 
Yeah well, I guess I'll start bidding on highpoint cards on ebay. I went raid0 for the performance. And because I like seeing big numbers. Mainly big numbers. I'm usually pretty good about backing up data to dvds, 80 gigs to dvds isn't tooo bad, but 300, fahgitabutit.

Right now, I believe the old controller was a Highpoint 370. I'm going to try and get a RocketRAID 133. Is that my best shot for salvaging the array? thoughts? input?
