According to the Associated Press, MySpace has agreed with more than 45 states to “add extensive measures” to combat sexual predators.

An official familiar with the multistate agreement said MySpace, the huge online social networking Web site, has agreed to include several online protections and participate in a working group to develop age-verification and other technologies.

And i was hoping to cruise past the school yard this afternoon and inform some lovely ladies that I am a friend of the family and to get into the car, btw, I have candy in here.

I kid I kid. :p

Age verification? The whole point is that we're talking about minors. They're not going to restrict it to 18+ and minors generally don't have any ID.

This will be as effective as those "click here if you're 13+" pages.

The funny thing is, is that online stalking is a much smaller problem than, say, getting hit by lightning, not to mention car accidents. Ahh, but lightning and car accidents don't make top news.

wont be long before they ask for a SSN...

in which case - BYE BYE Rupert Murdock!

True but MySpace can't do anything about those things. They can do something about this.

And whatever they do about it will be about as effective as the entire sex offender "industry" is already. Fat, bloated and stewing in it's own bullshit, completely ineffective and designed to just focus the spotlight more off of the real and on to the fantastic.

So what are they supposed to do? Just go ahead and knowingly allow sex offenders to use their site to ruin kids' lives?

What I am saying is the problem has been vastly overstated in the way that the response vs. danger is out of whack. The vast majority of thier data winds up being from fishing for "predators" by the government. All whipped up to a fevered pitch by a media who spews out facts that are distorted or just outright false. Hence, in a mess of unbridled fury and desire to grab the headlines, a system will be instituted which is doomed to failure.

It's all predicated on the blatant fallacy that teenagers have the sex drives of 6-year-olds, and that they would never even dream about having a sexual encounter, nor would they ever lie about their ages. C'mon, that's just horseshit.

Instead of throwing out large, expensive nets wide trying to catch so-called "predators", it would be much less expensive and much more effective to work from the other end, and provide comprehensive reality-based sex education for children before they get to the age where they will be reaching out and trying to sculpt lives of their own.

I think it would be much more realistic, and would dramatically reduce the ability for teenagers to be even become "prey", because they would be able to make informed decisions. Plus it works on so many levels, not just on MySpace or the internet in general, but in real life also.

I think, ultimately, that the vast majority of "predators" would vanish like the falsehoods they are, if we took that approach, because we wouldn't have to have a government creating them, raping us all.

I am not for predators, but I am all for wiping out the phantasms, the illusions, the smoke and mirrors being used to turn each one that does exist into hundreds, just to get us all to submit to retarded rules and laws.

Predators do exist, but so do special interest amplifiers. You just have to seperate the real from the bullshit.

Hey I'm all for the internet cracking down on child abuse, I believe the best way to do it, that will certainly please me the most, is to not allow kids to post anything, anywhere :)

I think you are completely wrong with this statistic. 500-1000 injuries resulting of lightning occurs each year in the US, over the past 34 years, 7,000 Americans have died. Most of these are not direct deaths of lightning, but more of heart problems or 3rd effects.

1 out of 5 (20%) online teens (age 10-17) have recieved an unwanted sexual solicitation last year alone. 4,000,000 youth uses the internet every day, 15,000,000 youth uses IM. 89% of solicitations are made in chat rooms or IM's.

As you can see, online predators are a much much larger threat.

for every rule or law pasted they take away one of your rights. in my opinion if parents dont want there kids getting talked to on the internet. dont give them a computer. simple and easy quit your bitching about how the sites should do all the work at protecting your kids. i live in topeka,ks and for you who dont know we have a business here called " THE westboro baptist church" and for those of you who dont know what im talking about go look it up.

Yeah...but those are spam/sex companies that are bent on soliciting the largest number of people, no matter the age range.

It's not some fat guy who has a thing for little Susy.

Why just block them? If they know that they are a sick bastard, can't you just send some guys to their house to kick the shit out of em?

Hell post their name and addy on the front page, if it's local I can take a few minutes to break some ribs.

Sick bastards should be dealt with on top of blocking.

I should set up a fake myspace account as a young willing girl and post my address as some crack house in Detroit. Might solve 2 problems.

I agree with most of what you said. I just think that, when a company has the power to very easily solve a problem (with, for example, age verification), there is no reason why they should not do so. Likewise, when a company creates or worsens a problem, they should devote some of their profits to fixing the problem.

What I don't agree with is the education thing. I think most kids know that they aren't supposed to meet online strangers in secluded places without bringing a cell phone or telling anyone where they're going, just as they know not to get into a stranger's car because he claims to be a friend of the family. Anyone who doesn't know that is just dumb and probably wouldn't be helped by education anyway.

1 out of 5 (20%) online teens (age 10-17) have recieved an unwanted sexual solicitation last year alone.

That number was taken completely out of context of a study that was quoted by a source that NBC used in To Catch a Predator in order to futher fuel the outrage. The 1 in 5 number also included communications between teenagers themselves (such as flirting, etc), mostly from classmates-- people they already knew. When stripped down to unwanted sexual advances by somebody the teen didn't know, the number was closer to 1 in 33.

I know that the 1 in 5 number is now ubiquitous, but it's also based on premeditated distortion that, quite frankly, makes the entire internet sex predator issue highly suspect. This isn't the first time numbers have been quoted by people verbatim that were either distorted or outright lies. It's been happening since the 1970s when the panic originally started, based on a completely fabricated number of 100,000 supposed child prostitutes selling themselves on the streets (which was subsequently turned into 200,000 and ramped up from there). All of that stemming from an off-hand remark to a reporter by a police officer.

You can't believe everything you read, especially when its a special interest group quoting an external study, because you are just getting thier biased spin on the numbers, and their interest is in furthering thier own cause, which just might be at odds with the truth.

The problem with that is, all the information children get now is lectures of a boogeyman-without-a-face is out to get them and deprive them of their 'innocence', instead of straight facts about themselves they really need to be able to make their own informed decisions. Not only that, the lecture-learning not only doesn't dissuade them, it makes them more curious about what's really out there, because they are a lot more skeptical of authority figures, and authoritarian imposed controls, no matter how well meaning it is.

Presenting them with all of the information about their bodies, the diseases out there and how to protect themselves, etc, along with teaching them personal responsibility and that they are in control of thier own destinies, is much less likely to trigger an anti-authoritarian response in regard to thier sexual activities. It will infuse them with self determination and self esteem that will provide a natural resistance to some of the "predators" we love to hate. Will that stop all of it? No. Some teens will still choose to have those kinds of relationships, but at least it will be an informed decision that they would be much more equipped to make.

To think we can just completely eliminate intergenrational sexual activities is a fallacy. But if it truly is all about "protecting children", then we have to get used to the fact that we have to look at it from both ends of the spectrum. We can minimize the real predation, but, if it's truly all about the kids, we have to put common misconceptions and personal moral issues aside-- because a lot of people who claim to be for "protecting the children" are really saying they want to protect their own personal mores and value system. More and more, those things are becoming diametrically opposed.

Regardless of what number you wish to believe (1 in 33), it's still way higher likely to be a child on line and run into a predator than it is to be hit by lightning (the original post I was responding to).

So no matter what you make that number or what you believe it is, it would have to be a massive number to be lesser of odds than lightning.

First off this new system MySpace is implementing relies on the fact that the parent has to know their child's e-mail address......see the problem?

I know 10 yr olds that can create 10 Hotmail accounts. When a kid gets on MySpace and their parent decides to remove them via entering in their e-mail address, they will just create a new one and re-register. This is actually even more dangerous than before because now the parent doesn't even know where to find their child's MySpace page.

Also, how will this effect legitimate accounts? What if I picked out some random person's MySpace page and pretended to be their parent, having their MySpace page removed? What kind of Parent Verification is there going to be?

You cannot expect a large corporation or the government to do a parent's job. Smart parents will use a keylogger to obtain their child's password and just login to their child's account unknowingly. Check and verify where your child is going when they say they are leaving the house. There are many more things that will ensure your child's safety.

Now lets take a look at chat rooms. What kid under 20 still goes into chat rooms? We have Facebook, MySpace, Flickr, WoW, e-mail, text messaging etc etc

You can join a chat room that is supposed to be about car parts and find out in less than 30 seconds, that car parts are not being discussed. As soon as you join a chat room all you see is "A/S/L?", "I am a nice guy please msg me so we can talk" etc etc etc.

I bet a ton of chat rooms are just filled with Pedophile stings cybersexing each other only to find out when they try to meet each other in real life they both aren't horny little 13 year olds.

If this is true, I can just see how much fun I am going to have :D

I've always wondered the exact same thing.

Minority Report is alive.

I think I'm gonna setup and account and see if they stop me. My username will be:

I. M. A-Prevert :eek::rolleyes::p

Hehe, maybe it would even out if the favorite teen hangout during thunderstorms became metal towers and oak trees. :D

I only responded to that because it's so wrong, yet so widely believed. And it's so weird because so many people will claim to distrust the government and media, taking everything they say with a grain of salt-- except when it comes to this topic, where they will wholeheartedly believe everything without nary a peep nor interest in researching the numbers further.. Leaves me scratching my head.

I take everything with a grain of salt, however, I am no professional researcher so I have to start somewhere to base my statistics of. The lightning statistics could also be biased, hell, it may be 10 times lower than that, however, it's a statistic I found by several (okay dozens) of websites who are quite credible in their reporting.

Quite honestly, when ever dealing with these types of statistics and reporting, it's not going to be 100% accurate, it never will be unless if every single person reports 100% honestly. Now, keep in mind, my logic was to show that the lightning hit to predator count is a lot lower than made out to be.... so even if it was 1:1,000,000 or 1:2, it's still a higher figure.
