OK im building a new setup. I have my amd Opteron 170 here already *hugs his opty*

and the graphics card i want is the 7800gtx sli ready etc.

the mother board im ordering is. ASUS A8N32-SLI Premium ATX S939 NFORCE4 SLI DDR

and thats where im stuck.. what ram should i get? i ant to OC this thing to its full 2.7g potential.

also.. cooling :| i looked a big beefy fans and such and ive also seen small cpu water cooling systems.. for around 100 dollars. i want to keep the pc as cool as possible. im getting a big case so i have room.

please assist me in my ram choices, my cooling choices. or if you think i can get a better vid card or mobo for less money or comparible to save myself some dough

thank you!!

oh ps. i order all my stuff from ncix. since im canadain :)

Shawn

edit: heres a cooling setup i was looking at. thoughts?
http://search.ncix.com/displayprodu...&vpn=RL-MUA-EBU1&manufacture=COOLERMASTER&p=1

the case im looking at is the
- Thermaltake Black Armor Full-Tower AXT Case with 11 External Drive Bays, Clear Side, Front USB, Firewire and Audio Ports

the psu i want is the
- Ultra / X-Connect / 500-Watt / ATX / Dual 80mm Fan / MS-Blue / UV Clear Sides / Modular Power Supply

cooling and ram.. and whether i should get the 7800gtx.. OR just get a 7800gt and a second one later on?

please. advice much welcome. thank you.

I'm happy with my x-connect 500W powersupply, but I've heard other people have had problems with them. I think I'd get a PS with a 120mm fan next time, maybe the OCZ modular one.

As for videocards, get the best single one you can afford, and get a second one down the line when a new generation of GPUs comes out and the price drops.

As far as ram goes, you can always reduce increase the ram divider and have it run slower than the FSB, so I wouldn't worry about it limiting your maximum overclock. I'm pretty happy with my OCZ 512s, 2-3-3-6, but you can get 2-2-2-5 or 2-3-2-5 stuff for reasonable prices. What you should decide is if you're going for 1gig (2x 512) or 2gig (2x 1gig), because the 2gig dimms will be a bit harder to overclock, it seems.

thanks for the advic eon psu. i liked the conenct for the look and amount of space it would leave with less cables

but yes a 120mm fan sounds like a better idea. i just need to find one on ncix i like and looks good in the case
i dotn have a problem cutting the case or what not for extra psu cooling

i've also sen a number of fan adapters you can buy to put int he rear bays or the frotn bays that will extend fan vents into certain hot spots of the PC

and since my hd is gonna run at heavy speeds a lot i may buy a cooler for it also

but im still trying to find a water cooler that i can run on my cpu. gpu and a hdd..

any ideas?

For ram I'd get this http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=14504&vpn=OCZ4002048ELDCPE-K&manufacture=OCZ Technology

For a powersupply I don't know what I'd get... the Ultra X-Connect 500-Watt does NOT have PCI-E video card supply cables, or a 24pin motherboard primary power cable.

For cooling, it seems like the big heatsinks are doing just as well as the watercooling setups for noise/performance ratio, and heatsinks are easier to install, and less maintainance.

For extreme overclocking, watercooling is better... but that doesn't seem to be your objective.

Hard drive cooling is easiest if you just put the drive near your intake fan.

I have basically the same setup. For ram i ordered corsair 3500LL ddr433. If you look at the asus QVL list for the board it gives you an idea of what to buy. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145594

There is a link to the mem I bought for my setup. Its actually labeled for that board on the packaging. I have heard nothing but good things from reviews of people that have the a8n32-sli board and this ram. For p/s I went with antec truepower 2.0 550 watt which is also on the QVL list.

Hope this helps you out some.

NCIX only has the old X-Connect. The new X-Connect2 is a much, much better PSU.

im goign for over clocking.. i think i shall stickw ith air.. i found a nice 120mm heat sink im probably getting. and with that case is hould have plenty of flow.

that ram is a lot but is probably what i will get. i want/need 2.7ghz out of this setup at elast.
or thats my goal. i think i will stay away fromw ater till ic an afford to do the whole pc with it. :)
so now its just picking everythign and where to get it

i want x-cionenct for the look and style. are there any psu's that willw ork for me with a simlair look/style but better cooling?

Not a good idea. PSUs with the bling-bling usually can't back themselves up when it comes down to real power delivery. If you want bling-bling with good power, get the X-Connect2... which NCIX is yet to carry.

The boards QVL list has Silverstone Enermax and Antec on there. There were some other ones that I wouldn't even think of buying. I personally went with the Antec truepower 2.0 after reading some reviews, stable and quiet. The Ultra you are looking at does look really nice and I think you're going with that more for the look than for the performance. I always go for performance first then how it looks. But to each his own.

The Modstream isn't very good. Not enough +12V amperage. The cables are also very stiff. The OCZ Powerstream is a much better PSU, and should be something you might wanna shoot for.

If you want stability and some good looks, theres only 2 choices...the ocz powerstream that was already mentioned, and the Hiper Type R 580W. This thing has the best modular cables I've ever seen as well.
Here are a couple of reviews, here, and here.
You're going to be hard pressed to find another psu that performs as good as this one, and looks pretty kick ass to boot.
I run the Hiper on the rig in my sig, folding 24/7 and encoding video daily, for the past 4 months and the rails are rock solid......and I put quite a load on this thing......A64 3000 @2.9 1.65vcore, 2 gb ram, 3 hd's, 2 opticals, 12v water pump, 2 6600gts sli, 4 120mm fans,1 80mm fan, 2 ccfl.

  • 12v rail = 12.01
  • 5v rail = 5.13
  • 3.3v rail = 3.32

The first review uses software to get voltage readings and the second review does so with a multimeter, though with a lightly loaded system... not good.

Well I posted my unofficial review results above. I'm sure you could get a bit more load with a pair of 7800's sli'd, but changing from an x-connect to the hiper eliminated my random reboots and allowed another 150mhz oc. My box reboots once a month for windows updates.....good enough for me.

alright here's what i own now. 950 dollars cdn later

- ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe Motherboard NFORCE4-SLI S939 DDR 2XPCI-E16 2PCI-E 3PCI SATA RAID LAN Sound 1394

- OCZ Platinum EL PC3200 1GB 2X512MB DDR400 CL2-3-2-5 184PIN DIMM Dual Channel Memory Kit W/ Ramsink

- AMD Opteron 170 Dual Core Processor S939 Denmark 2.0GHZ 2MB L2CACHE 90NM 64BIT Retail

still stuck on the psu. i need something that looks clean but will run right since i may very well run dual sli and probably only OC this to about 2.4 or such. and will have 4 idea hdd and 2 serial.e ventually maybe 8 serial. so i need a lot of 12v readyness?

You do need a lot of 12V amperage. I like the Enermax Liberty, perhaps the 620W model will work for you.
