My "real world" RAID benchmarks

I thought you guys may be interested in some testing I did with 2 brand new Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 8 ATA133 40 GB hard drives I borrowed from work.

Tested on the following system:

PC: A64 3000+ - MSI K8T Neo FISR2 - OCZ 1GB DDR - eVGA GeForce 6800 GT
WD 74GB Raptor (System) - Linksys Gb NIC - Windows XP SP2


Test A:
--------

Copied Data Folder (total size 772 MBs w/ 21 files) from WD RAPTOR System Drive:

To single Maxtor (40 GB) = 21:6
To RAID-0 with 2 Maxtor’s (80 GB) = 22:5


Test B:
--------

Copied Data Folder (total size 772 MBs w/ 21 files) from WD RAPTOR System Drive while playing a Divx Movie on Maxtor:

To single Maxtor (40 GB) = 30:1
To RAID-0 with 2 Maxtor’s (80 GB) = 31:1


Test C:
--------

Time it took to copied a folder (total size 3111 MBs w/ 767 files) from Network Share while zipping the Data Folder (total size 772 MBs w/ 21 files) on the Maxtor drive (used WinRAR fastest setting):

To single Maxtor (40 GB) = 8:03:9
To RAID-0 with 2 Maxtor’s (80 GB) = 10:27:3


Test D:
--------

Time it took to zip a Data Folder (total size 772 MBs w/ 21 files) on the Maxtor drive. Used WinRAR non compression setting:

To single Maxtor (40 GB) = 27:7
To RAID-0 with 2 Maxtor’s (80 GB) = 50:2



Please note that this was done using the onboard Promise RAID controller on my motherboard. Since it only had 1 IDE slot, I had to put both maxtor drives on the same cable. One master and the other slave.

Anyhow, thought I would share.

Using both drives on the same cable with raid 0 will really throw the numbers off because of the ide limitation of being able to access one device at a time on teh cable. Lots of performance lost that way.
 
yeah i figured. Before i started, i thought i had two IDE slots for raid :(
 
Yeah. The other thing i've got to say is that most the benchmarks here are going to put emphasis on raid 0's large sequential file transfers vs random usage patterns. All in all it's not a bad little test performance wise, it just needs to work out a few kinks.
 
IDE raid is older now.

How about some SATA raid? and BTW, what stripe size are you using.

yeah, i would have loved to do the tests on two SATA drives or at least have the two IDE drives on 2 different channels.. I didn't have the goods :(.... damn you promise controller :p
