So I went from a generic logitech mouse to the MX510. No mousing surface, just the table. Considering getting Ratpadz but not sure.

My thoughts...

A little big for my smallish hands. Seems a little light for it's size. Clicking feel is very different from my old mouse. Haven't played an FPS yet so I can't comment on the 5.8MP vs whatever the optical was.

Gonna install Mouseware to check out the new buttons.

Should I get a mousepad? Or just keep using the table?

It's pretty... got it in blue only, no red :(

//edit: More thoughts. After using it for a while, ergonmically it's completely different from my classic mouse.

My hand doesn't completely grip the mouse, with my old mouse I used the very tip of my fingers and the palm of my hand doesn't touch the mouse at all. Now, I don't know how to grip it so that the buttons are all within reach. They seem... awkward.

(Remember, this is 10minutes into using it)

I'm always doing the standard..index finger on left mouse button, middle finger on right mouse button.

This way... the other fingers seem to just be there... awkward. and when I need to click any of the cruise up or cruise down buttons, I seem to have to lift my index or middle finger more than I'd like to.

The cruise up button is a little far up... and the "switch programs" button is a little far down.

The Foward button is a little far up too.

Anyway, these are just rants within the first 10min of use. Maybe I'll get used to it. Maybe I'll throw it out. :) We'll see....

if you are going to throw it out, pm me for my adress and i'll pay the shipping :D

I have a blue one, and I love it! I upgraded from a MS optical Intellemouse, and I find the button placement on the MX510 to be absolutely perfect. Yeah, if you play any games, you need a mousepad. I suggest a Func 1030, an Icepad or a Steelpad with some teflon tape.

You will NOT like this mouse if you haven't owned a Microsft Intellimouse/explorer mouse previously. It took at most 1 hour to gradually *accept* the mouse after switching from the intellimouse. Will probably take you a week maximum. I do not really admire the MX510 as I found there is basically no difference between the Intellimouse/explorer except the awkward feeling but I'm sure it's a placebo effect considering I RATHER have an MX510 than an intelliexplorer (I own both mouses) due to the "oooh 5.8 megapixelz leeeet...". It's sad but I find no difference. Now, unless you try the Razer viper and Boomslang-- they are DEFINITELY a difference...

I recommend tefloning and a surface pad. Always a difference (for the better). I use fUnc 1030U-- very good.

You'll get used to putting your middle finger on the center strip, it'll just take a few hours of steady use.

Anyway, I remap the center buttons so that the top one is pageup (I prefer it to cruise up), the middle one (the one under the wheel) is task switch (because I have to lift my middle finger to use it), and the bottom one is page down. The top I can hit by shifting my finger up a little, and the bottom one I can hit with the first knuckle of my middle finger.

Just a thought.

And if you think it's light now, get some teflon tape on it. The things FLY. :D

Hm... so it seems that the func pad is the better one? I want durability. I've heard that some of these pads die in like months of use. I don't want that! I know it's like <20bux but still... I don't want to have to replace pads every few months.

As for teflon tape and pads, where to get? I can only get Ratpadz locally :(

You just might as well just order the pads online. The fUnc surfaces are VERY durable. I have used one over 6 months now and it is all fine. I even switch between the smooth and rough sides once in a while. No changes in its glideness really. But of course, mileage varies. But overall people do recommend the fUnc. Go with teh fUnc'z!11 KTHXZ

RatPadz's durability is quite weak. It died within 4 to 6 months. Few people had luck with it for a year. But mostly within 3 to 4 months just died off (a.k.a. not smooth enough to use). And I would advise against that mouse because of it's elevated height on those pads. When I tried out the fUnc's, I never wanted to go back. It was comfortable.

After a night of use, I'm starting to really love this mouse. I don't even use the other one on my laptop anymore. Just stuck with the touchpad, haha.

Hm... still haven't played any FPS so I can't say anything about the accuracy.

I've moved the mouse to a sheet of blue paper, that's my mousepad for now.

func and all the other pads are so much more expensive than the ratpadz. Hm... maybe I'll spend my first paycheque on one.

I've "modded" my mousing habits. Now I use my index finger for the cruise up and down buttons. Much easier. I hit the back button with my thumb, and don't touch the forward button cos it's still too far up.

I'm really liking it, hehe.

Love mine. If anything the mouse is too small for my hand, so I didn't have to adjust at all. It fealt 'right' after the first 5 minutes of use.

I simply cannot even get used to having my middle finger to stay on the middle due to a reason: Quake III. Anyone would understand how important flicking your mouse is. The flicking feels comfortable with my middle finger on the second mouse button. But if I can type 140+ WPM with 3 fingers on my keyboard, I can get used to it with just two fingers and the other 3 (thumb on the obvious place with two gripping the other side) for the mouse then.

And seriously though, the mousepad should be a fUnc. Do not be fooled the price. It is cheaper for a reason. It's less durable. The fUnc has double sides and even each side lasts longer than the RatPadz. Worth it? Yes.
