My HD Makes Noises...

ok, if i leave my comp off for a long time. once i boot up for like 10 minutes. there is a buzzing noise that my hd does. then it just completely disappears... should i be worried? is it becuz its very cold now? it just started to happen right when it started to get cold.
 
well..any noise other then the high pitched buzz...isnt good..so there is a good chance it is dying....if you know how to remove it...do so..and find the serial #'s on it...goto that makers web site..and see if its sill under warrenty..if it is...rma it..and save anything on it soon..befor it does lock up
 
what do u mean high pitch buzz? when i first start up my comp(after hrs without opening it). there is like a fan like buzz. sounds like the fan is a bit messed up kinda buzz. then after 10 minutes or so it stops. if my hd dies, it won't take out anything with it correct?
 
well..its kinda hard to know what kind of a "buzz" its really is...but you shouldnt hear much from your hd's most of the time...the sound they make is at around 7000 rpm's...so you will know if its right or wrong...i would say this...if you never noticed the sound before..and now you do...try running some diagnostic tools on it..and if the drive does fail..it wont hurt anything else in you box
 
I dont mean to be a smart alleck, but are you 100% sure its coming from the HDD?

Perhaps its a fan... take the side panel off your PC, and run it for a bit without it, and listen super close when it starts doing it. Also, watch your fan action... Since it is cold, your fan may not be coming on on boot, but then kicking in when it heats up, causing this whining when it does come on.
 
HDD noises are hard to diagnose
a few things to consider
a drive will "click" when recalibrating, the click of death being an endless loop of unsucessful recalibaration
with the areal density of a HDD so high these day, very precise calibaration is required on the fly as a HDD heats up and all the components expand thermally

an alternate theory is the motor and bearings making noise until they reach an operating temperature, this is largely a model by model thing and even a unique to a given drive based on what use or damage it might have sustained in the past

sounds typically described as "grinding" however or the obvious click of death are very bad signs, so running the diagnostic and monitoring the SMART status (with a grain of salt) would be a good idea
 
im 100% sure its my HD becuz i put my ear right on the HD and i hear it make the sounds. there is nothing else close to the HD that could even make noises w/o having something put in it. how do i run these tests? btw i couldn't have noticed them b4 becuz my other psu was pretty loud. it sounds like a buzz then it goes away, not a smooth buzz. i noticed it after i installed a new psu FBS 500 watt and my 6800 NU. i unpluged and repluged the plugs on the HD and it seemed to have made it better becuz i just turned on my pc after 4 hrs of idle and the buzz noise went away in like 1 minutes. i dunno...

as far as SMART monitoring various aps can read that info

i get what smart does and plannin to get that tonight and run it. but whats the other link about? can someone explain that one to me? i tried to read what they were sayin. but it was very confusing. btw how accurate is smart? if it says my HD is fine. should i stop worrying?
 
Smart is useless for catestrophic failure prediction
its a tool you attempt to track wear with
and it allows you to see the slow degredation of a HDD if everything goes well

some alerts and predictions it can give are very accurate, other times years go by past the predicted failure point :p

as far as the other "link"
thats an ISO of the single best compilation of assorted freeware your likely to find
and again since you havent said which make of HDD you have its the best I can do
the diagnostics of most of the major manufacturers are on it
youd simply boot to the CD and select the one you want
(of course it will take awhile to download the ISO and then you have to burn it to the CD)

if you download the diagnostic from the manufacturer you either be able to run from inside windows (thought it might reboot you to DOS)
or you burn it to a Floppy disk, then reboot and boot to it
