My Fry's dealing

Odd. I've never had any problems with Fry's or their employees. I, however, am not in California. I'm in Texas - the friendly state. Employees in the Austin store have always been kind and courteous. Not to rag on California but after doing phone support at an entry level job I discovered that the rudest callers always came from CA. On the flip side, the nicest were always from Canada.

At any rate, Fry's has always had a great return policy. Zero hassle. Case in point - I tried to build a system quite some time ago with the worst possible success rate. Nothing worked. After numerous returns, I finally decided to get a refund (out of sheer frustration). During that time I lost my receipt and I was past their 15 (or is it 30?) day return policy. Guess what - Got a FULL refund without any hassle. I went back later that year and got an even better system that worked.

I sure don't mind paying a little more knowing that I'm not going to have a problem returning something if it doesn't work. Besides, I'm spending locally.

A bit of good amongst all the h8.

Do a search on google for 'fryed fry's' and read the stories about getting fryed. I hate that store more than anywhere else on earth. I went there once and got a scanner(radio scanner) that was opened, and later found out someone had swapped the guts of another older model radio with the one I bought. I didn't figure it out until well after 30 days though, so I was screwed.

The only thing major I've ever bought at fry's was my antec sonata, and the only reason I got that is because I had to pester several employees even though most said they were "out of stock", but finally I got someone to go look in the back and lo and behold, they have several back there.

I only go to the Fremont Fry's to buy stuff that nobody else has in stock. But 90% of the time, even if they have what I'm looking for, every single frigging box on the shelf has been returned with the little white sticker on it. EVERY box.

Fry's must be THE WORST place for taking returned shit and putting it right back out on the shelf. And the discount is really lame, too - usually only a few bucks. Screw that, I'll pay the extra $5 for a NEW UNOPENED item.

Not only are the products almost always returned items, their sales people know nothing about the departments they work in. Plus, most of them (at least in Fremont) are impossible to understand. When I do end up buying something and checking out, anything the checkout person says I just nod and grunt, or ask them 3 or 4 times to repeat it, cause I can't understand them.

I wish NewEgg had retail stores, cause I'd sure rather stop by and shop with them than dealing with Fry's.

Hahaha you trusted the word of a Fry's employee, that was your first mistake.

Lol why do people even go to fry's?

Because if you are smart, know what you want, recognize what has been returned from what is new, and don't deal with the employees, it can be a pretty good deal at times. And it was the only place that had the BFG 6800GT OC in stock in the whole area. Plus, they have some really great deals on DVDs at times.

Listen to yourself: NO customer have to go through this ordeal.

Well...if you're picky, you can just sit and wait without a card. Personally, I'd rather have the video card.

Heh damn straight, thats where I work. At least at the Austin Fry's we know our crap. The California guys are mainly the kind of people you get that would be working at best buy or circuit city trying to convince you to buy stuff you don't need. Austin being the mecca of tech companies that it is means we get to choose people who already know what they are talking about.

Just a tip for people out there, just because you work in the computer or components department doesn't mean you have to know every single minute detail of every single product/technology there is. I know alot about computers and that general area, but I know junk about wireless technologies. When you have an associate who doesn't seem to know what he/she is talking about its usually because they aren't well versed in that particular area, try another associate or just do the best you can by yourself. Don't expect them to be techology gods, they are normal people like you and me.

And to sum it up, Austin=rules California=sucks.

Austin and DFW area Fry's apparently are the only good ones.

btw last weekend the DFW stores had 160GB Maxtor 8MB 7200 drives for 69.99 (grabbed 2 :) )

in San Diego Here, theres always one employee in the video card section that always seems to be working when im there. I repeadidly ask when the 6800's came in.. he said " i knew you would want this" and handed me a PNY one..he said he saw them selling fast so he held one aside for me.

HEHE but too bad i saw like 5 more on the shelf ROFL!

anways nice guy. i bet he saw me come by like 50 kagillion times.

They just built a Fry's out here in the Suburbs of Chicago and I have so far had good experiences with the place. First, they are the ONLY store in the area that I could find a 6800 card (regular 6800, GT, and Ultra), much less any other computer equipment (Fry's was the first store I ever saw a CoolerMaster case in person, or Raptor HDs). Out this way I have not found a good Compusa or any other store that carries anything good. Actually, most COmpusa's are becoming like Best Buy's, caring a LOT of AV technology and shrinking the Computer parts selection. Second, the employees that I have dealt with, although only a couple since I usually say I'm just looking, have been nice and somewhat knowledgeable. Plus, prices for certain items (i.e DVDs) are MUCH cheaper than most stores in the area. I am glad I finally have a Fry's out my way, cause now I can see things in person that I want to buy, rather than looking at a box or picture on the web.

Zero

p.s. My last visit to California (L.A. area) I went to a Fry's and Best Buy and thought the people were idiots. But then again, every store I went to, the people (mostly teenagers/ early twenties my age) were dumba$$s with crappy atitudes (what in the world could they be cranky about, its warm and sunny ALL the time) that couldn't tell their hand from their nose.

Ok, now this boggles me. Why would I have a job I knew nothing about? I mean do you go to your doctor because he is just like you? Fuck no you don't, you go to your doctor because he knows what the fuck he's talking about. When a person goes to shop at a store of any kind they want someone with knowledge on the products they sell, not to be shifted from associate to associate. Being an ex retail employee I strived myself on this, because who the fuck wants to find out that the person they bought from was full of shit or tossed around like a used tissue. Your job as a salesman in a technology based job is to keep up, if you don't know shit about tcp/ip or 802.11x then pick up a damn book/use google and find out.

*Pressure released* Sorry, but thats just lazy.

I have not had any trouble with Fry's in Seattle, but have had problems at every Best Buy I have ever walked into.

Yesterday I walked into BB in Lynnwood, WA and walked back to the video cards. Not a single display box for 6800 series cards around so I asked the kid that was back there if he could help me. I asked him if he had any 6800 based cards in stock. his reply astounded me; "is that a processor?" I said kind of. It is a video card chipset available from nVidia. He walked me over to the video cards display and started to look around. I explained that I could look there and see, without his help, that they had none on the shelves. He said that they did not. I asked him if he had ever heard of the BFG 6800GT or Ultra cards and he said no. Then, thinking that I was speaking with someone that works in appliances or something, I asked him if this was his section....... "Yup"

Amazing. It really boils down to the people that you hire and not the store. It is just unfortunate that the store is represented by ignorant fools that don't care if you walk away hating them. You don't remember their names - you just remember that you had a problem with the store.
