I've always been terrified of the thought of OCing, but I couldn't resist getting an e2180 for $80 and giving it a whirl. I've got some decent cooling, nothing overly special (Arctic 7 pro), but I'm really impressed. I had the vcore as high as 1.45 when I was trying to get to 3.0ghz stable, but it seems I didn't get the best chip of the bunch.
I'm running Prime95 right now at 2.8ghz and it seems stable (@1.3875vcore) running ~53 celsius which I find amazing as I'm living in Florida and my dad doesn't like using the air conditioning (room temp is at best 80F. Can't wait until I go back to school in a week where I keep it a comfortable 70 degrees.
Anyway, I have the memory voltage pumped up, and the timings are pretty low at the moment. It's Corsair XMS2, and I've got a Gigabyte P35-DSRL. I've got a fan on the northbridge because I hear it got hot. I'd really like to get 3.0ghz stable, it's sort of the mark I set for myself. Is the FSB supposed to not go over 1333 on this motherboard? I'm a little confused about that. And I don't really understand the memory timing ratio thing. That still confuses me.
The chip doesn't seem to be cooperating though. If it holds stable at 2.8ghz I can't complain (40% OC!). I'm addicted to cooling and OCing now, I've been up since midnight and it's 5:39 AM, haha. If anyone has any idea, I'd like to know. The closest I got to 3.0ghz was 1.45vcore 9x333. Prime95 ran for about 30minutes, and then the computer rebooted, Prime didn't fail. It was interesting. One thing I've noticed that doesn't seem to be in line with what others has noted, is that when my vcore is upped from 1.35 to 1.45 the temperature during the stress test increases just 3-4 degrees on average farenheit (53 to 57C or so). I won't complain though, heh.
Also, what are some good benchmarks that tests strictly CPU performance? I don't have the best graphics card in here yet (I'm saving for a 9600gt/8800gt I think). I want to test this little warrior against some of his c2d counterparts.
