hello,
just wanted to share my success on my first computer build and my first overclock. no one showed me how to build a comp, just been reading online (mainly this forum) on what components to get and what to watch out for. everything turned on and worked the first try. learned to overclock off the sticky found here and a sticky found on the evga forums. overclock also went smooth on the first try, only had issues when i was trying different memory speeds (see pics below, got different 3dMark06 scores with different settings).
comp specs:
Lian Li A05B with blowhole on top and bolt on window, both done by performance-pc
Q6600 G0 SLACR @ 3.0 GHz
EVGA 780i
EVGA 8800 GTX
OCZ 2G DDR2 1066 MHz (PC2 8500) X 1 (2 GB total)
Zalman 9700 NT
WD Raptor X 150 GB
Coolermaster 850 W
monitor: Samsung 245BW
the only thing i really would change is the psu, but i don't regret it. cable management sucks with it because it comes with a lot of wires and is not modular. i went with it because the compusa in my area was closing and i got it for $78 with tax!
i know the new 9 series GPUs are coming out, but again i went with the 8800 GTX when they had that (one day?) special going in the hot deals section, $299 after rebate! and since i bought it so recently, i still got a lot of time on EVGA's 90 day step-up program, but i think i'll be content with the 8800GTX, i want to pick up another.
idle temps are 38 deg C. i set the cpu core voltage at 1.3 at the bios. idle cpu core voltage by CPU-Z is 1.264 V. see stress temps and stress voltages in the pics. all other voltages are set to AUTO in bios.
now about the ram settings. after reading overclocking guides, it was always suggested to keep the the settings to a 1:1 ratio (bus speed:ram). since it is DDR2 the equation is really bus speed:ram*2. with 1:1 (ram is 667 MHz) i got a lower 3dMark06 score. i got the higher 3dMark06 score with the ram set as 1066 MHz, i forget what the ratio i set it in the bios, but CPU-Z reads it as 5:8 (see stress test above). i thought maybe the 3Dmark06 with slightly higher score was a fluke, but i ran it twice, exact same score. i'm a noob, so i don't even know if 3dMark06 is the standard benchmarking tool to test RAM, but I read somewhere that people were comparing RAM settings and using 3dMark06, and they're result was opposite to mine and emphasized how much better and stable it is to run 1:1.
thanks for looking!
