My Computer Desk/Case Concept Design.

Well here's a concept design that I've been working on. It's a computer case/desk all in one. Not really sure if there's anything out there like it already (havn't checked). The finished design will have water cooling. Still need to add that! Also need to add the cable management idea I have. Once it's finished I'm going to send it to see what Antec/Corsair think of it.

I didn't put any text or anything in desk video. So to explain it...

The CD/DVD drives are on the left side, there's enough room for 5. The black glass front panel, comes off and there is a sliding motherboard try. Alternately you could take the top clear glass off to access the motherboard. There are 3 smaller fans to the right of the motherboard, and 2 on the left, each underneath the hard drives. Taking the left black glass panel off, allows access to the CD/DVD drives and hard drives. The right black glass panel, is where the power supply and cable management box is. Underneath the desk is the curved tube that is right below the power supply fan. It's supposed to help move the heat away. On the back there are 3 larger fans, the two on the right (looking at the backside) are by the CD/Drives and Hard drives, to help keep them cool.

I havn't decided if I should add fans to the black glass front panel.
There will be two radiators, one will be mounted on the right leg, and the left leg. Or both on right/left leg.

So tell me what you think of the case!

I made it with 3ds Max.

I have also post this over in my 3ds max thread.

Maybe Im missing something but wouldn't that make for an extremely thick table top? It looks cool and all but like..how would you fit under it? You're typical table top is like a inch-inch and a half thick tops.

Correct...
For best ergonomy keyboard and mouse should be rather low and if you're actually sitting in chair under that table extra thickness rises those quite high.
 
Yes, but when you sit down how much room do you usually have between the table and your legs? 4-6 inches (at least for me). It would only be about 5 inches thick, and it is also placed back a little ways so, your legs won't be as close.

Concept Design means room for improvement :D So, please, I need criticism! ;)
 
Best of luck to you man. that is a cool design concept. just make sure you document everything. in case they reject your idea, then later design one of their own. also I might suggest getting your stuff notarized if possible
 
It seems quite cool, but my main concern would be that if you were doing anything serious with it for any length of time, unless you had a water loop then the top of the desk would start to get quite hot.

Yes, my original idea was for water cooling. However, I realize that there's quite a few people who don't have w/c. So I thought if I added enough fans that it would help get rid of heat. The top of the desk getting hot didn't really cross my mind. I'll think of something! :D

I have seen a similar mod on Bit-Tech I think. Right down to the glass top. What I want to do, I have several old Mits Altair cases and the desk for them. I need to get to modding a modern PC into that.

What a nice thought... keyboard starting to melt id you overclock too much.
But then again you could it for keeping food warm. :p

Adding thin divider plate between components and top with air being blown/drawn through space between it and top would surely help.

There is a reason people don't make desks 5 inches thick. Even if my legs are 5 inches from the bottom of the table top my chair sure isn't. In fact my chair arms touch the bottom of my desk and my arms extend out flush along them right onto my keyboard.

Try this. Rest your hands on your keyboard as you would normally to type. Now, lift them 4-5 inches into the air. My hands are at about my chin.

Your desk is fundamentally flawed imo. But cool concept. A work around would be to move the computer to the left or right side allowing a normal desktop width that you can skoot under so the thing actually functions as a desk.

Your desk must be really high, if you lift your hands 5 inches and it's at your chin. The top of your desk would be around the height of your heart, (from heart to chin).

I have the components of the computer back, so it won't interfere with legs. I need to move them back a little more, going off of the picture.

I thought the part where it doesn't actually function as a desk was pretty self explanatory. If your goal was just to make a huge case that you can set stuff on then looks pretty good. I assumed that you would want to sit at it and use the computer that's installed inside it.
 
If you go by that picture, there's really no place to fit an extra five inches to the thickness of the desk. At best it would hit the legs. If you have a chair with full-length arms (not like the stubby, deformed ones on the picture) then you won't ever be able to sit like that because the arms are in the way of the case/desk.

WTF?! If you raise your hands 10cm from your normal typing position you get to your chin?! How much do you slouch?

Hmm...looks like a 3d design like mine. IMO mine is better. I worked on it last night and took pictures of it, but FML I thought I copied them over to flash drive but I didn't. So I will put those up later today or tomorrow. :eek:

How doesn't it function as a desk? The whole point of the desk is so you can look down and see all your computer parts. It still functions as a desk. I have no idea where you are coming from, so if you could explain it a little better please.

In short, i extended the size of the desk so there is around 11.4 inches between the underpart case, and the front. Added water cooling, and the two rad's on the side of the desk. Instead of one large sheet of clear glass (in the middle), there's 2 smaller sheets, with small studs in between to help support it. I also added the reservoir which is cutout of the right black glass panel. There's a fillport on the top, to fill up the res. It looks good. Still more room for improvement.

I also got thinking about how the HP touchsmart, and Imac cram all of the components within such a small space. Could decrease the size even more. Unfortunately wouldn't leave much, if at all, room for SLI or water cooling.

I really like the look you have going here!
Two suggestions I have. if you're going to have two radiators why not also have two loops or perhaps a single large loop...
pump > rad > video card(s) > rad > cpu > (start back at pump)

You will be able to support SLi/crossfire cards and still have good temps all around this way.

Yea, you can do what ever you so desire for the water cooling part. My water cooling setup was the inspiration for it. I have my two rad's mounted on the side of my case with them going into each other. Although I'm not cooling my video card.

Why don't you have the rads under the desk? That way you'd need less piping, the rads would be in a much safer position, and it would look better...
 
at least that would keep your balls happy depending on how strong the vibration is.... atleast it will surely blow some air on it...
 
I didn't put the rads underneath because that would mean the warmer air will stay underneath the desk, which will in increase the temperature. I pud the rad's on the side because it would be easier to add more.

My first idea was to have cutout's in the leg where the rad's could go. I'm just not sure how well that would work.
