My 9800pro get alot of artifacts at 9800xt speeds. I have stock cooling. How are people getting like 420mhz on the core and etc? thnx in advance

But i heard you can overclock on stock cooling? What do u think would be the best speeds i could with stock cooling.

So you're just unlucky then.

My card's stock everything, and hitting 420mhz core np.

Easily. 430+
Every card is different.

I got very lucky with mine! I got an OEM dell that can get to 470, artifact free with a Vantec Iceberq. The memory is great too, it can go to 390 with no artifacts. I flashed the bios a bit low to keep the temps down. Who really cares about 1-2 extra fps :D

what are your case temps?

even a fancy aftermarket cooler won't help much if your case temps are way high because of poor airflow

Currently, my case temp is 81.5F, 27.3C. Room temp is 75F. I have a Thermaltake XaserII with 4 Vantec Stealth fans and a 92mm Panaflo over the swiftech mcx4000. My first 9800pro (dead after a month after replacing the stock hsf with a stock AMD HSF) would only get to 430, even with the AMD hsf. Memory speeds sucked too. It was a BBA 9800pro, bought when they first came out.

With stock cooling I am getting 440/380. It can probably go even higher but I havn't tried yet, I'm happy with that overclock. 6100+ in 3dMark03

My case temps are about 29-32 C. And i have a 9800pro buit by ati. Bought it at bestbuy. One more thing for some reason when i use ATi TOOl it says 378 on the core and 337.50 on the Core. I thought it was 380/340. Weird but , your saying i wasn't lucky enough to get a good card. And one more thing when i overclock, should i just go to 400 or get there gradually? Thnks for your help.

I have the same card as you do Shawn, Built By ATI, and I also bought it at Best Buy. When I use RivaTuner to check the core/mem at stock I too got the slightly off 378/337. So I guess it is just a luck of the draw as far as ocing goes. For your last question I think most people would say get to it gradually. However, I went straight to 420/360 for my first overclock on my card and it worked fine, then did increments of 10.

When i use RIvatuner after i test 420/260 and then close it when i reopen rivetuner and goes back to default. Whats the problem?

After you hit the Test button? Check the box that says apply overclock on windows startup, that's what I have mine set to so I don't have to worry about doing it everytime I restart.

Ok i got it to work i had to restart. And For my Memory i have no heatsinks on it. im at 420/360:D . Where should i stop going up with stock cooling. and memory b/c i have no ramsinks thnks

I have no heatsinks on my memory either and it got to 380. Go as high as you can till you start to see artifacts or other wierd behavior from your card.

with custom cooling I get 450 out of the core easily, I could fool with voltages and such, but it's already so damn fast...
