Multiplier or FSB?

OK, I'm the proud owner of an Abit NF-7 and a Barton XP-2500 (not Mobile :( ), and I've got a couple questions about overclocking it:

Is it better to crank the multiplier as high as possible before adjusting the FSB speed, or should I go the other way around, get the FSB as fast as possible before cranking up the multiplier?

What's a good rule of thumb for safety on the CPU VCore? It runs at 1.65 by default.

I noticed that Prime95 started erroring out when I ran the FSB and RAM at 400MHz instead of 333 (it's not the Nforce2 ultra). How can I find out if it's the RAM or the northbridge that's having problems? (It *is* PC3200 RAM).

if its rated at 400mhz, i really doubt that would be the memory thats crapping out. if the chipset is the limiting factor then your best bet is to crank the multiplier up as far as possible while keeping the fsb low enough to make the chipset happy
 
FSB if you can, then multiplier...uhh, also if you can, all "newer" non-mobile Bartons have been multiplier locked. You'll probably want to keep the core voltage to no higher than 1.85V if you're air cooling. That's give or take, depending on chip stability, what sort of cooling you have, what your temps look like, and how willing you are to risk cooking your chip. Your board should be fine with a 400MHz bus, so you may want to take a look at your memory voltage and timings. Sometimes you'll get errors if the timings are too tight or the voltage isn't quite high enough. My PC3200 runs advertised timings at 400MHz but it needs 2.88 or 2.9V or whatever exactly that closest setting is to pass Prime (with nothing else changed but the VDimm set to default, it fails within seconds). May want to play around with that and your timings to see if you can get stability.
 
Well, if you had no limited factors you would want the multipler as low as possible and the front side bus as high as possible.

For example a 3ghz machine with 200fsb*15multipler is slower than a 3ghz machine with a 300fsb*10multipler for obvious reasons.
