i'll just do it in a list, so it's easier for everyone

1:/> is u320 backwards compatible with u160? [i got a 36GB 15K RPM drive for $3, and it's u320,and i only have a u160 card]
2:/>with the id jumper blocks, mine only have 8,4,2,1, so do i jumper like 4 and 1 to get 5?
3:/>i have a adaptec #29160 controller, and there are 4 pins in the upper righthand side, are those for a floppy drive power connector?
4:/>can scsi drives take more shock than IDE/SATA, the drive previously mensioned was dropped, still in the factory antistatic bag though

Thanks for ANY answers!:)

Yes, absolutely. Keeping in mind that any card on a regular PCI bus will be limited to a theoretical max of 133MB/sec, there is really no difference between u160 and u320 on a regular PCI bus. I use an Adaptec 39160 with my Fujitsu MAU3036NP and performance is excellent.

Really not sure about this, but I’ve never had to change any of the settings on any of the drives I’ve gotten. The adaptec will do a little scan in the bios and it will detect the drive regardless of what ID it has, unless it just happens to be the same as the controller or something.

3:/>i have a adaptec #29160 controller, and there are 4 pins in the upper righthand side, are those for a floppy drive power connector?

Nope, and it’s highly likely that plugging that into there would result in fire.

4:/>can scsi drives take more shock than IDE/SATA, the drive previously mensioned was dropped, still in the factory antistatic bag though

It depends, but hard drives can generally take fairly large shocks as long as the drive heads are in the parking position, and if the drive is still new then I’d say that is a fair bet. If the drive heads were over the platter (say someone just pulled the power on the system) then a shock can cause the drive heads to “crash” into the platters causing bad blocks, etc.

2 The ID are set in binary so 5 is 4+1, 3 is 2+1, 15 is 8+4+2+1 so on so forth.

3 I am pretty sure this is the connector for the activity LED one for each channel.

4 Generally no infact it is probably less since they are built to much tighter tolerances.

well the drive was still in the antistatic bag, and it had a tamperproof sticker from HP on it

with the ID's i kinda figured that but didn't want to wreck anything

with the power question, i heard of controller cards using power connectors

ill be using it in a normal pci slot, until i get something with pci-x, the website says it will work

thanks, now i'm going to install these drives and stuff, be back in a few minuites with performance

well i killed another s370 p-3, 3 now that are dead, damn, now i'm posting from linux, and it keeps wanting me to view the ad on the bottom of each screen with movieplayer or something, it has a popup, and i hate it so much, well don't expect many updates lately

I have no idea what you're talking about. How did you kill the chip? Why is your Linux installation giving you popup ads?

the thermal compound was silicone [not silicon] sealant, stupid me!, and it's the video format in the forum's ads that are causing the popups
and i can't get at the drive, so no model # for now
