I have a MB with two built in gigabit Ethernet adapters. I plug into a 4 port 10/100 router then to a cable modem (insightbb).

I don’t think I ever use up the 10/100 bandwidth with a cable modem, Cable modem may use 5% of the 100 mb bandwith on peak.

OTOH I do have an extra port and extra nic and extra 10/100 RJ45. It is tempting just to plug it all in.

Am I correct this will just load up my router and slow things down more?

if you do this you will create a loop. a partition error. or something I forget the term.
basically you will do something bad.

--unless you make them all different subnets manually.

the thing is, there's no reason to plug them all in. cable, the fastest ive ever heard of, runs 6Mbps
even old ethernet is 10Mbps....
then theres 100Mbps
even a single 10Mbps network cant be saturated by that 6Mbps cablemodem

Correct, it causes a feedback loop which in effect can cause a "packet storm" and bring the network to it knees
