Lots of links to check out for anyone who's doubtful.

Microsoft Security Essentials is a Great Antivirus Application

The release of Microsoft Security Essentials has changed the landscape of antivirus software. We’ve finally got a completely free application that protects against viruses, spyware and other malware — without killing system performance like some of the “suites” tend to do. In my personal experience, it barely slows down the machine and rarely affects my work — and during a deliberate attempt to download some viruses (for testing purposes), it immediately found and blocked them from doing anything.

You don’t have to take my word for it, however. Not only did AV-Test.org find that it detects 98 percent of their enormous malware database, but AV-Comparatives (a widely known anti-malware testing group) found that MSE was one of only three products that did well at both finding and removing malware, including the leftovers. It was also the only free product to grab their “Advanced+” rating-the top honour for an anti-malware solution.

The more tech-oriented readers will probably note that MSE does not do any fancy heuristics to detect viruses that aren’t in the database already, which is a feature offered by some paid solutions. In my opinion, this feature is usually unnecessary and a massive system drag if combined with a healthy dose of not installing questionable nonsense.

That's pretty slick. I'm looking forward to trying it out when my current AV expires in a month or so.

Installed this software at home and also at my desk at work. Absolutely loving this software, this replaced Avira for me.

I still can't understand why people would choose something else at this point. MSE kicks ass.

I just hope they won’t start adding extra features (web shield, e-mail scanner, dynamic detection, parental control, fancy GUI acrobatics, …etc) in the future.

I installed it on my old Pentium 4 machine at work because its lighter than Norton Corporate the company uses and because there is no way to completely disable the Norton Client.

I don’t like to be the one reporting this, but like Kaspersky and unlike Norton and Avira, it doesn’t detect every crack & keygen out there as a virus (now you know why I wanted to disable Norton :D)

edit: I love what the review said about UAC.

I don't recall the source but I remember reading that Microsoft stated it purposely was targeting a lightweight product to satisfy netbooks and the like. So I'm optimistic it will stay that way.

It sure is nice, if I can use it it would be even nicer:

"Not available in your country or region

You appear to be in a country or region where Microsoft Security Essentials is not available. Thank you for your interest in Microsoft Security Essentials."

MSE is a great AV/anti-spyware app, but I stuck with Avira since my license doesn't expire until mid-next year. After that, I'll probably go MSE until some AV company decides to sue for anti-trust violations to stay alive.

The only issue I've had with MSE is that, at times, copying files to external drives seems extraordinarily slow with it installed. Once I uninstalled it, the speeds "felt" more like I am used to. Then again, I could be crazy.

So....use a proxy?.

I've installed this on 3 desktops and one laptop.

Desktop 1 Windows 7 Pro x64
Desktop 2 Windows Vista HP 32bit
Desktop 3 Windows XP HP 32bit
Laptop 1 Windows XP HP 32bit

On all the desktops it runs great but all have 768mb or higher ram.

The laptop on the other hand is a older dell with a Celeron (2.2GHz, 512MB Ram). Whenever MSE is installed the system hard drive was always churning away and everything was super slow or even lucky to get something to run. Monitoring with Process Monitor showed it was MSE just accessing everything, I shut it down and system worked fine. Just before I uninstalled it the system was barely working, giving low memory errors, and using like 834mb of RAM and pagefile. As soon as it was uninstalled system snapped right back to working order. I went back to Avira for this laptop.

Just a small warning to those with that might be having slowed performance after it's installed. Otherwise, I really like MSE, and love it doing quick scans on my SSD drive, gotta love 2 minute scans!!

I was downloading from a newsgroup... holy hell talk about eating up 100% of my weak CPU.

but once I excluded that folder and app in MSE, all was good again.

only issue I've had so far between my aged XP desktop and my Win7 laptop

I still can't understand why people would choose something else at this point. MSE kicks ass.

Because it is made by MS and some people are tools.

i love it, went on all my systems!

So how long until MS gets on the E.U radar for this program?

I'm still under my NOD32 license, whenever it expires i plan to give MSE a try,

I really don't try to hate Microsoft. I just really hate fighting with my machine to get it to work. I also really dislike all of the creep that tends to happen with a lot of MS stuff. I'd prefer to have one program that does one thing really well than one program that does 4 things poorly. That said, I've used MSE. I've recommended it to my friends and family. I haven't heard any complaints. This is a product I think MS hit out of the park.
