Mp3s skip and lag while typing

I have a problem that has been going on for some time even after fresh installs. When I am playing an .mp3 file and typing in IE or AIM, or Word my mp3s start skipping around and lagging. It does it with everything in my taskbar closed, and nothing is running in the system taking up cpu cycles. It does this in several players including WMP and Winamp. I am running XP Pro and my system specs are in my signature. Has anyone else has this problem?

make sure DMA is enabled... hd access in PIO mode takes some CPU resources... also there might be a problem with your keyboard and buffering...

I can close everything running in the taskbar and check the task manager for apps that shouldn't be running and it still does it. Also, DMA is enabled for both HDs.

It's a fairly common problem with the A7N8X motherboard. Is your keyboard connected to the PS/2 port by any chance? If so, try connecting it to USB instead. This fixed the problem for me.

Interesting, i'll have to try that one, every once in awhile i'll get odd keyboard related behavior, lagged typing etc...

Thanks for the help, the keyboard was connected to the PS/2 so I moved it to USB and its working fine now. I wish that problem would be fixed because I have alot of USB devices and cannot really afford to use a USB for a keyboard. I guess I will just have to get USB 2.0 hub now.

Good call.

i had the same problem with mine and it seems to be caused by loose pins... it never happened unless the keyboard connector got yanked out of the back of the computer (kicked... its suprisingly easy to do) when i plugged it back in while the pc was still on it seemed like it was haveing trouble buffering the mp3s while typeing... but every thing seemed to work just fine other wise, a reboot always fixed it in my case.

glad to hear moveing it to usb helps as well, but if you cant afford the usb port try buying a walmart cheapo keyboard and see if it was your keyboard at fault, if not, return the keyboard and get you hub.

thore

Great to hear! I know what you mean about a shortage of ports...

I honestly don't know. I think it may be tied to the resources that the PS/2 port uses but I'm not really sure.

I know others have had success by changing the HAL of their computer from ACPI Uniprocessor PC to Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC but that seems alot more drastic than swapping from PS/2 to USB.
