For my birthday, my parents are going to get my the stuff needed to put my rig in a SFF box. The budget is $200 now. I will probably get money for my birthday to add things, but since my birthday is Friday, we want to order the things this weekend. (please don't suggest shuttles, not a fan of them, and not enough PCI slots)

Right now I'm aiming for

I'm going to put my current psu in there, and this seems to be a good case along the lines of what I want for a pretty good price.

This is where I am a bit unsure. I was debating between this and the DFI board, but chose this in the end, as I'm not going to be doing any heavy overclocking (obviously). One other I would consider would be if somebody could give a link to a site selling that Biostar s754 mATX motherboard with the nForce 3 chipset. I don't have anything against VIA (my current board uses the K8T800), but I would like to try an nForce for the pci/agp locks in case I do decide to oc a bit. (Also I know somebody is selling one on these forums, but my parent's wouldn't buy it from here)

The way mine is set up now, is an 80mm, on a fan adapter, on the stock heatsink. This makes it way too tall for the case, so I needed something short, and that cools relatively well and is quiet.

Once I get a bit more money, I plan to get 2 more things. The Superflower 550w Modular psu as a quieter replacement to my current one, and the modular cables should help in a SFF environment. I also plan to get a 1GB stick of Patriot RAM off monarch for $130. This would give me 1.5GB of RAM running at 2-3-2-5 timings, which I don't think is bad at all.

Anybody have any suggestions or comments?
 
i dono about that system, but you might want to look into www.monarchcomputer.com 's hornet pro line... they only sell them as barebone systems, but thats what it sounds like you need.... an athlon rig from them is gona run a little bit more than what ur looking @ (about 300-320) but its defenatly worth every penny as the case is plenty big for all ur hardware, and has excelent cooling, and its a little bit smaller than the SFF case you have chosen...
 
Actually, I checked the dimensions and the Hornet is a bit larger. It's also out of my price range.

but also, you can check the forums here for the hornet, as some people are selling theirs...

these 2 are basicly all the choice u have in SFF pc's without going toward a more HTPC style....

and if aspire hadent jus came out with their case... you would only have one choice..

haha.. i just read that and say that you didn't want a shuttle... plus the mir on the sn85g4 must have just ended...

Heh, actually just did the math and the Aspire is like 1.8 cubic inches less. Anyway, I think I'm going to order the stuff tomorrow. Think I'll like it?
 
I wouldn't buy such nice ram for such an inept chipset/socket combination. Save the cash for a better GPU, that will help more without question. Granted, you're buying into antiquated technology, and while it's a good deal, it's probably not a good investment- just my opinion. Maybe wait a few and look for a 939/PCIe/NF4 setup to come along? No doubt SOMEBODY has to be making a board with this configuration somewhere.
 
Isn't the Hornet limited to SFF PSUs?
Why in the world would anyone suggest them anymore?

I've read a couple of reviews that couldn't get RAM with tight timings 2-2-2-5 to boot with the board. Kyle won't touch FoxConn with a 9 foot pole.

I'd get the MSI 939 micro-atx board. 4 dimm slots and it supports dual core.


 
...which would mean you already have the cpu. Also, where did you say that? Scanned your OP for that information, saw it nowhere (other than talking about some Biostar board). One tip: when you have limitations, bounds, conditions, etc, it is always appropriate and necessary to list them off- make it easy for us to see what you need, cause we love doing this stuff and will come up with the best available options for you- like any search engine, the better your query, the better the results :)
 
Well considering I have a 754 mobo already, and was asking about others, I think it's safe to assume I need a s754 mobo.

So basically, something within these specs -
$200 max (may be able to go around $30 over)
Need case + motherboard + cpu cooler
Needs to be s754
SFF (obviously)
No shuttles.
 
I already ordered. Overclocking isn't too much of a big deal, as you can't do much without locks anyway. I also ended up ordering the mobo of Zipzoomfly for the free 2-day shipping.
