Most intensive game.

"But can it run Crysis?" has almost become a household phrase.

I was surprised when I got a new laptop and even my roommate, who is not a gamer by any means, pulled this one on me.

What is currently the game in which is is most difficult to achieve high FPS?

Should the phrase be "But can it run Crysis Warhead?"

Crysis Warhead is actually a bit better optimized (read textures are a bit reduced) than the original.

I find Stalker: Call of Pripyat is the most graphically intensive game I've played if set at DX11 (or DX10 if you don't have a 5xxx series), high (Eyefinity) resolution, highest settings with AA. In addition to nice effects and IQ, the foliage and draw distance really suck up the VRAM and CPU power.

I'm looking to upgrade actually once 5870 2GB or GTX 480 arrives... The higher resolutions possible with Eyefinity really make use of the extra VRAM.

I think Stalker Clear Sky actually demands a bit more from the hardware than S:CoP. So either that or the original Crysis.

Haven't done any benches, but I think CoP is the more intensive title since DX11 adds tessellation, no?

But you're right, Clear Sky can also be a system killer when cranked up.

Clear Sky's DX10 lighting goodness is AMAZING...... if you don't mind the slide show :(

IIRC based on [H]'s many gameplay evaluations Cryostasis is heavier than Crysis in GPU horsepower requirements. Unfortunately it's only because of the near constant snow and ice effects everywhere, graphically it's not that impressive.

Stalker COP is heavier than Clear Sky if tesselations is enabled, there was this site which did evaluations on the game's effects. DX11 > DX10.1 > DX10 > DX11 Tesselation.

Trine caused the most workout for my gpu (although not the lowest frames) as it did for a few other people I have seen around the net. Odd really but on reading a thread on the steam forums one time I saw that it was due to the super sampling they used or so was said.

Crysis ain't got nothing on it at least for my system.

Stalker: CoP, GTAIV, Crysis?

Bear in mind that graphically intensive doesn't necessarily mean good looking. When I loaded up Stalker I thought I was playing Everquest from 10 years ago, yet it was running like crap.

Dirt2, BF:BC2, Mass Effect 2 are the best eye candy there is atm, imo.

I think Stalker CS and CoP are two of the best looking games out there. The lighting and some of the effects are amazing when cranked up.

Forgot another intense, good-looking game... Risen. Would make sense since I believe it's based on the same engine as Stalker and from the same company.

Also, Empire: Total War can shut even my system down when cranked all the way up at Eyefinity res.

Battlefield BC2 will also put a strain on your rig when maxed.

Only if your not running a 4 core processor and even then it's rough without Hyper Threading on top of it.

4x AA everything else maxed at 1080P and it sometimes dips before 60 FPS in tense battle scenarios on a 32 person server.

I may get a second 5870 just so I don't have to sweat the thought of having any FPS below 60. :p

Not the same engine and not the same developer. Risen was developed on the Genome engine by Piranha Bytes. Clear Sky WAS published by Deep Silver, as was Risen.

BFBC2 wiill average around 70-90fps for me when cranked 16XAA 16XAF, however there are a couple of points in the single player missions where it will dip down to around 40fps.
Whilst Stalker IS the most demanding...I can't stand the look of it, and think it looks rubbish.
Crysis and Warhead would come in second for most demanding IMO.
have to say though..BFBC2 really looks pretty amazing at times in the jungle stuff...there are certain points where it feels almost Crysis like.

In other words, if you are NOT running a 4.2ghz i7 920 and a 5870, it will strain your system ;)

Running a 3.6ghz c2q 9550 and a 5850 here and I'm seeing mid 40's on the fps, which is only a handful of fps above what I get from Crysis.

Shattered Horizon is DirectX10 only and is made by Futuremark (who made 3dmark) is really tough to run, look really solid on high settings too.

Also Empire Total War

The jungle looks nice, too bad a lot of the other maps look like crap, particularly the snow maps.

I don't when playing BFBC2

Ill have to say...

Crysis and Bad Company 2. in BC2 when action is getting intense it can REALLY strain the system with 8xAA 16Xaf HBAO on.

But GOD its fucking fun

Crysis Warhead is less intensive than Crysis due to more optimizations and some cut corners to smooth gameplay for better mass consumption.

Clear Sky/COP are demanding because of the ancient X-Ray engine not supporting mulitple cores - yes it's a single core game. Beautiful engine and IMHO best PC series of the decade but a terrible waste on your CPU.

GTA IV with supersampling antialiasing with ENB series is probably the most taxing thing you can do to your system. Even the normal GTV IV demands a quad core. Even on just the stock game, you can quickly adjust the sliders past 1.5GB of required vram. Add in the supersampling to deal with no built in antialiasing due to deferred shading engine and you have a real chugger.

I can max out everything (GTX 285 SSC @ 1680x1050) except Crysis & Empire Total War, Total War might be even heavier than Crysis , frame rates can also drop in RTS games with a big map and lots of troops. maybe it’s just me but IMHO I think games like FC2 and MW2 are better looking than Clear Sky with much higher frame rates. Clear Sky textures, shaders and amazing lightening are nice but the final result isn’t that impressing.

Well, the stalker games are a bit odd in that way. What they do best is definitely urban areas and indoor stuff( where the lighting really shines). However many effects they throw at it, the outdoor areas just don't look as great as in many other games. I suspect it's intentional, though. A few modders have managed to make it alot prettier, so one can only conclude that the developers wanted it to look the way it does.

Well, you can enable SSAA in any game and it will automatically become "intensive" if it wasn't already :p. There are also a lot of poorly coded/optimized games out there that are "intensive," but don't have much to show for it (Cryostasis comes to mind). For games that really give an awesome visual presentation considering the horsepower needed to run them, yeah, Crysis still takes the cake. The game was so far ahead of its time, it's amazing. After that, I think the STALKERs come next. Check out the original STALKER: SoC with the STALKER Complete 2009 mod; I think I have some screenshots on my computer, I'll post later when I'm home. There's also a STALKER Complete mod for Clear Sky that should be out soon, which should make Clear Sky look even better than it already does. However, if you have a 5xxx series card, definitely check out Call of Pripyat in DX11 - the lighting is without a doubt the best in any game I've ever played, it's simply amazing (I'll get some shots posted of that too). The thing about the STALKER series is there's a lot of inconsistency as far as graphics quality goes. While the lighting and texturing is simply amazing, as well as the structures/buildings, other things people have mentioned, like some of the outdoor environments, as well as the character modeling is lacking at times. Metro 2033 is coming soon, and is based off an engine that is very similar engine to STALKER's XRay; provided it wasn't too crippled to run on consoles, it could be another great looking game. Finally, just to tack it on there, Arma 2 is pretty awesome when you max everything. I don't think it gives quite the best visuals considering the horsepower needed to run it, but it's one of the most realistic games out there (and fun as hell if you can find a great server).

As promised, here's some shots of STALKER: SoC with the STALKER Complete 2009 mod installed:

And some Call of Pripyat DX11 shots, vanilla game:

And lastly, some shots after I "corrected' the FOV to a more accurate 83 (default is 55):
