Does anyone know of a couple of reasonably priced infrared guns (or something better than an infrared gun) to use for measuring hardware temps?

There's quite a few around, but even the "best" ones seem to always have at least a few people stating that they're not all that accurate, with a 10C+ difference, and only good to very roughly ballpark temps.

Is there anything that's actually proven really accurate, that isn't horribly expensive?

Should I go with something other than an infrared gun, since I'm only using it to test PC hardware? Something with a physical lead on it, perhaps...

Suggestions appreciated, thanks.
 
You could try to find a thin film resistance temperature probe to put under your heat sink, but even then all you're getting is a spot temperature since each core's temp can vary. And then the thermal effectiveness of your heat sink is diminished.
 
No, this isn't to measure CPU temps, but to measure the outside temps of all other hardware, and if using an accurate infrared gun, to measure even air/ambient temps, as well as RAM temps etc.

I know some other enthusiast here must know of an accurate model of infrared gun...?
 
Sorry, guess I read that wrong. I don't know much about infrared thermometers, but do I know some good companies you can rent full on thermal imagers from.:p (Who doesn't love a bit of overkill?)

Ha, no problem... yeah, that would be some serious overkill. ;)

Just need to to find something that's as accurate as possible. Also, I've heard that with infrared guns, depending on the type of (reflective issue) paint on RAM, it can be hard to get an accurate read at all with infrared.

Is there another type of thermometer I can use for general hardware temp measuring?
 
You could wire up the various modules with thermal probes. Something like this might work. But I'm not aware of a contactless solution short of a full on thermal imager if a laser is having issues.

What would that probe be used with, what type of thermometer?

Precision in terms of temp? At least within just a few degrees... as accurate as possible, +/- only a few degrees at the most.
