I would like to use my directv reciever to my comp,. Since the tv tuner is too much hassle, i found out that some monitors have composite video inputs. The dell 20.1 widescreen has them but it costs 359, too much for my budget.
anything cheaper out there?

also i havent been able to get a definite answer to my earlier question

if i buy a regular monitor with vga and dvi inputs.
I can connect my video card to vga and then my directv reciever to dvi,

will that work, and will i be able to switch the sources?

thanks

I don't know of any low cost monitors (below the Dell's $359) that have additional inputs (beyond DVI-VGA)...composite is not great in any case though. If your Direct tv reciever has DVI then I don't see any reason why you couldn't use it with a monitor that has both VGA and DVI. Any monitor with multiple inputs will either let you switch from a button on the front or through the OSD.

thanks for the reply

the monitor i want to get doesnt have the source button

so as you said , ill need to switch from vga to dvi and vice versa using my os

can someone comfirm that this is possible.
lets say i have the directv connected via dvi, and video card via vga, and i switch the signal from vga to dvi, how would i switch back to the vga screen using the os ?

Hey dude,
You dont use the OS. If the monitor does not have an input button, you switch the source with the monitors built in menu. OSD stands for on screen display. There should be some sort of menu button on the front of the monitor.

Or if your monitor doesn't have the menu you need to swap the cable in the back of the monitor. I had to do this on my old Samsung 193P+ when I couldn't use Remote Desktop to see what my server was doing; my main PC used the DVI input but I could unplug that and plug in the VGA cable from my server instead.

thanks for clarifying that.
i was under the impression that monitors with dvi and vga inputs can only use one the of the connections at a time

Getcha a sammy 204BW from newegg, Its DVI and VGA and switches with the touch of a button :)

That may be true for some..I don't know. I do know that I'm using both on my Dell 2007WFP (DVI-pc, VGA-Xbox 360) and just use a button on the front to switch.
