i have a radeon 9800 pro and a dell trinitron 19 inch monitor. recently its been flickering like its turning off and on pretty often, i was wondering what it might be and do i need to replace something? btw if it matters i'm running win2k

might the refresh rate have been reset to 60hz? Otherwise it might be failing, i know older trinitrons had quite a few problems here and there

More than likely the monitor. But to test simply get any other video card. Some cheap piece of junk from a friend or whatever and see what happens. You should be sure before you go dropping cash on either a new video card or monitor.

Make sure your drivers are updated, make sure your Video Card is seated securely in the AGP slot. Make sure your power cable to the Vid Card is all the way plugged in, and make sure it's shared with a CD drive or by itself, sharing it with a hard drive will cause the card to become unstable when the hard drive is activated fully.

get a nice mitsubishi 19 or even 22 inch, there cheaper now. then get a x800 down the road, your 9800 should be fine.

my refresh rate is at 85, so i guess the monitor is dying? i've had it since summer 2001

yea i had the problem on my 19" viewsonice.. it would flicker bad and turned off.. i just went to bestbuy and replaced it since i had the service pack.. but i do remember i tried to turn off the monitor and it woulnd't and then i unplugged it and POOOF SMOKE came out hehe i guess running at too high refresh kills monitor faster than its posted

Sounds like the monitor is dying. They tend to do that while dying. Replace it or send it back for repairs if it's under warranty, Better yet, if you don't already have 2 screens & it's under warranty do both. ie- get a new one, send that one back, and when it cimes back frim RMA you'll have dual monitor sweetness.

If the monitor is flickering on and off, then it's probably the picture tube. I've heard of that happening to several monitors at work and seen it myself a few times. Not any easy fix, but definately a good reason for RMA. If you're out-of-warranty you can try to get it repaired but it'll cost you about $150-200.

Any one consider it might be a thermal protection thing? maybe getting too hot and shutting screen off? Have you tried it at say 75hz refresh rate? and as mentioned before..update drivers.

i'll try it on 75 hz, its not flickering like it was yesterday, once every now and then.

oh well i guess i'll just keep using it til it goes, i don't really have any other options at the moment

the monitor really goes nuts when i play diablo, but never halo. when i'm in windows it'll do it once in a while, i'm installing the new cat drivers for my radeon, hopefully that'll help

did you check the pins on the connector? Maybe one or two are bent

i haven't unplugged the monitor since i plugged it into my new system, so i doubt the connector is messed up. my friend has an old 19 inch crt he isn't using and he's offering to sell it to me for 150 so i might take him up on his offer if this keeps up

Ummmm YES THEY DO!!!!

Depends on the monitor as to whether or not it needs a SPECIAL driver. Of course anything in a PC needs a driver of some sort.

My 19" Sceptre LCD is perfect using XP's built in driver. I gain nothing by loading the Sceptre .inf file...

A lot of plug & Play monitors WILL work fine but for the pesky ones that don't, a proper monitor driver usually helps a great deal.

*agrees fully* :p
