I am looking for a good monitor to give to my wife for christmas. She currently has a 17 or 19" TN thats a HP i think. Anyway she wants to get into photography/editing so i thought a upgrade to her monitor would be good. I have had my eye on the Dell Ultrasharp U2311H 23 inch for a while now but cant make up my mind. It seems the size would be good at first glance BUT i know sometimes on my laptop with the 16:9 ratio im having to do some scrolling at times to see everything. With say a web page i can just make it wider but thats not the case with a picture. That got me thinking about 16:10 but those offerings are slim and arnt as wallet friendly.

Her current monitor is a 4:3 ratio at 1280x1024 so i dont guess she will lose anymore than what she has now height wise. Do any of you have the actual display size not including the bezel of the dell U2311 or U2410? In all reality the 2007FP would probably work the best but wouldnt gain much real estate if she has a 19". The 23 or 24" size is about as big as she can go desk wise.

So what do yall think? Are there any other options i should be looking at? She isnt really a gamer so 120hz wont really be something i need to factor in.

Thanks for any help,

If she's looking to get into photography, the U2311H is a great, cheap monitor to get. Granted, you'll need to grab a colorimeter to get it calibrated properly but it has great colours. And a good black level, for an IPS. As for the size of the screen, I believe it IS 23" without the bezel.

The U2410 is also a good monitor, but as far as I'm aware, the wide gamut can prove an annoyance to some users, with the neon reds and greens being too vibrant.

Honestly, unless you're willing to pay a lot more, then I'd say it's time to get used to 16:9. I don't think the ratio is all that bad, now that I'm used to it. (Came from a 16:10 myself.).

23" 16:9 U2311H
Height: 11.27"
Width: 20.05"
Area: 225.89 in²

24" 16:10 U2410
Height: 12.72"
Width: 20.35"
Area: 258.88 in²

I would go for either a:
Dell U2311H 16:9 1920x1080
or HP ZR24W 16:10 1920x1200

Now unless you can read a page in under 10 seconds, I dont think scrolling will cause many problems at 1080P/1200P (and yes I own both 24" 1080P and 24" 1200P)

If all you do is web-browse I might agree with you. However, for coding, photo-work, or a multitude of other uses that lost vertical space is really needed.
