I own a Sony multiscan G400. I think it is capable of running 1600x1200. I run it in 1280x1024. It has an extra input and i bought a Belkin Male to male VGA cable for it. I am running it from a linux box and the picture is not very good. I am running the linux box at 1024x768. (the picture looks fine w/ the included monitor cable) The cable is thinner than the supplied cable from my monitor.

I looked on the web to buy another cable and all i see are VGA cables. No cables are stated as being SVGA or XGA. Do i need just a thicker VGA cable to run at high resolutions, or does it have to state SVGA or XGA? Please post a link if you know a place that sells that proper cable for my situation.

You're going to want a shielded VGA cable - so "SVGA" - it'll have two thick cylinders mounted around the cable, one near each end. This keep interference from messing up your image. You can buy these at most computer stores (online) as well as from somewhere local like Radio Shack.

Hope that helps

Nothing to do with it. Shielding helps but does not stop. Any VGA cable should do it

I got the VGA/Super VGA monitor replacement cable at radio shack (#26-276). It looks a lot like the cable included with my monitor. It works great. They did not have any cables like this one at CompUSA. It was difficult knowing the quality of the VGA cable from online stores. Thanks for suggesting radio shack jhtevans.

Actually it has everything to do with it. Not only do thicker cables shield from external noise better, they also are shielded better to prevent crosstalk between the wires. The dual ferrites also help to smooth out any noise as well.
