I have a Shuttle SB65G2 and I am wondering if there are any mods I could do to the powersupply so that it would quiet down. I see that the SilentX PSU for Shuttle have one 80mm or maybe 60mm fan on the side and no 30 mm fans in a push/pull config. Please let me know because the sound is starting to get to me.

you could go through the trouble of replacing the 40mm fan in the PSU, but if I remember correctly you will need to desolder it from the PCB in order to replace it (its not socketed). I'd recommend replacing with the SilentX PSU for two reasons: One, higher power output (stable) and two, better airflow design than with the stock PSU that comes with the SB65.
It's cheap insurance instead of going through the trouble of trying to find a replacement fan hoping that the noise is silenced. Course a $10 replacement fan is cheaper than $70 PSU

One thing to do that helps a little bit is to cut the grill out of the way of the fan. It does only help a little bit, but it's a free easy thing to try.

umm, I wouldn't reccomend dremeling it or you'll get grinding bits all over the inside of your system and power supply. Just use a big pair of snippers (wire cutters).
Thank you guys for all the input. My friend and I took apart the PSU and noticed that the stock fans run at 12 volts. We then decided that 5 volt modding the fans would be the best thing to quiet down the fans and it did. We unplugged it from the powersupply and spliced both together and connected it to a molex connector I wasnt using. The difference is very noticeable and the fans still move a good amount of air. I also cut out the grills in front of the fans to help with the airflow since the fans dont push as much air as they used to. Next up is the fan on my Radeon 9800 Pro since its so damn loud. Any suggestions?
Old school 200 watt and 220 watt Shuttle XPC PSU will burn with fan on 5 V. 100%

Fan is a 40x40x10 mili. 20 mili thick fan doesn't fit but can be moded outside of PSU to blow cold air in PSU. Papst has nice once.
Also You could install outside blower to blow air thrue PSU and remove stock cooler totaly. It would be better for cooling and quiter to.
