Modern ultrawide display?

Hi,

I got a Acer Predator X34(same panel as ASUS ROG swift pg348q) that do have a nice pictures but the feel of the unit is low quality. I have already had a couple of problems with it and after googling I am not alone. So now I'm thinking of switching to another display from another brand.

The first one I found that should have alot better quality is the Alienware AAW3418DW, it seems perfect BUT it does not suport HDR!? I got a LG OLED with HDR and it's a nice effect so buying a display with it would be nice.

I have vary good experience with the premium segemnt of DELL displays and that is why I thought a Alienware would be great.

The only display that I found that got HDR, suport for G-sync(Freesync 2) and resultion 1440 is the LG 34GK950F, might this be the better choise?

I've had similar experiences with my Acer gear. I thought the specs were always good until I got them in and discovered the chintzy feel their products tend to have.

I stopped buying them a few years back but I guess they're still pretty popular since they're still around and looking like they're doing pretty well.

You will not really get HDR on the LG 34GK950F. Also hdr isn't supported that well anyway in PC games and windows. Imo its more for movies, but if that's your thing 34" ultrawides really only have the Asus PG35VQ would be your best bet, but imo overpriced as hell.

If you really want HDR then the better option would be to go with non-ultrawide 4k like the Asus XG438Q(43 inch, 16:9). I'm not sure about any other recommendations

Also keep in mind almost all HDR panels worth getting for HDR are VA type panels and will come with all the VA Caveats.

Their cheapest stuff is cheap -- but functional. I have plenty of Acer monitors around that while chintzy, continue to work well, including a Predator.

Sounds like I should not even consider HDR at this point.

Would the Alienware AAW3418DW be a good candidate if I ignore the HDR?

The high price for entry currently on PC monitors with proper HDR probably is a good reason for most people to not consider it. To counter Edins' point, though, HDR has been a great experience on PC for me so far and it's getting even better as more and more releases are supporting it.

As for the AW3418DW, it actually uses the same panel in from the X34 and PG348Q, just an updated version of it to support 100 Hz without overclocking and 120 Hz with, along with other improvements to response time and input lag. It is also made by Dell, which has a good reputation for build quality and support in their displays. It is a good candidate for a gaming SDR ultrawide.

My experience has been the opposite. Until RDR2 every game with HDR that I've played have been stunning. I also don't think there has been a recent AAA release on PC that I've played that has not had HDR. Support on PC has been steadily growing along with the HDR PC monitor market.
 
The Samsung CRG9 is a Super-Ultrawide (it's like double 27" 1440P monitors) and is HDR, but it's edge lit and it's VA. It's on sale on Amazon for $1049 - was $1500 a few months ago.

Alienware has a new 34" that looks pretty good and should be in the $1100ish range as well.

The most interesting Ultrawide is the new LG 38GL950-B that is on the cusp of being released but it's $1800ish

There are really no perfect options, you just have to set a budget, prioritize features and look around.

There's also a new Nixeus 34" 3440x1440 model. Featurewise it's pretty much nothing special so not much of an upgrade for OP but it's $550 on Amazon so might be good budget option.

At the current sale prices I think the CRG9 is pretty awesome deal as it will do everything your average ultrawide does and more if you want. HDR is not great on it though so I would not buy it if you want that. Anything that is not FALD or OLED is not great for HDR.
 
Thanks, it sounds like I should just hold off and see what the future brings.

The problem is that im not sure my X34 will last that long. The top 2 cm of the screen flicker from time to time with G-Sync, according to google its not that unusual but the only fix is replacement, I am however outside of the warrenty now :( . The other problem is that the display cracked LOUD and OFTEN due to heat,I sent it to Acer but they found no problem so I opened it up and applied greas, after that its silent but it do not feel like a solid display.

So no Im thinking of selling it before its to late and buy a new one. Im happy with the picture and HDR seems not to be that important so the Alienware should be a good bet.

I did however have to change the Acer X34 3 times before I got one with acceptable back bleed, its still alot, clearly more then I ever have hade but its okay. So this will probably be a problem on the Alienware display as well.
 
I have the AW3418DW and it’s a very well built monitor with a great picture and 3 yr warranty. I really like it. You may also look at the newer version aw3420dw both on sale atm. The 34GK950F also looks real nice with 144hz.
