modem problem, possible IRQ configuration?

i was wondering if a few of you Modem experts could help me out?

machine:

AMD 1700+
WinME clean install (only software installed is what came w/ OS)
Motherboard: FIC At31

history:

my sister's bf built her a cheap pc and it works perfectly, except for a problem we've been having w/ the modem. we started out w/ a modem blaster 56k pci. the hardware and drives installed without a problem, but for some reason whenever we would try to setup a new AOL (spew!) account, the aol software would crash. we looked at the AOL log, and it says that there is an issue w/ vcomm.dll(winmodem drivers i presume) so i thought it was a driver issue. i uninstalled and reinstalled some updates, but they didnt' work either.

her bf thought maybe it was the modem itself, so he bought a external 56k modem. we uninstalled the previous pci modem and drivers, and then installed the usb modem, but we are getting the exact same issues as before. we tried msn and it is able to dial a phone number and connect for about 2 seconds before it disconnects and locks up the pc.

the only thing left i can think of is an IRQ issue. i know the modem uses COM3, which is the proper port for modems, but the motherboard is so cheap and stupid that its hard to figure out which device uses which port and IRQ in the bios. also, how do i figure out which IRQ it should be on? and shouldn't the bios automatically detect an issue and reassign the IRQs? is there a utility i can d/l that will tell me if there is an issue before i go changing the settings around?

also, i've looked in the motherboard's manual for any info, but it proved to be not much help. one option called "Modem use IRQ: This feature allows you to select the IRQ# to meet your modem IRQ#. the options are : na, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11" and the current selection is NA. shouldn't that be automatically detected by the bios? or will i have to manually set it?

man, i guess if you want to make a cheap pc, you still shouldn't skimp on a good motherboard :/

thanks for the help guys!

USB modems can also be Winmodems (not that I have any problems with Winmodems).

I think vcomm is a comm port driver (WIN9X OS). I would delete all of the comm ports, reboot, redetect new hardware and reinstall the com port drivers. Quickest fix I can think of.

Look on the AOL setup CD, it might have overwritten the vcomm.dll when it was set up, AOL is evil like that. If the AOL install did not bork the VCOMM, try the following link to restore the .dll from the CAB files.

http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...rt/kb/articles/Q129/6/05.asp&NoWebContent=1#2

Then reinstall AOL from another CD.

This is why I would rather have WIN98SE as you can use SFC to restore files with a little less headache.

WINME + AOL = good luck.
