Well, I looked at the thread title for the FAQ of the case modding forum, and saw that gameboy mods were mentioned (in reference to the little LCD screen on it, I think.) So I got to wondering, has anyone ever modded a GBA SP? It definitely sounds like a totally sweet idea. It's pretty small, so there's probably not much that can be done to it, but... I don't know, the though of GBA modding made me very excited. Anyone ever done this/heard of this being done/know of sites where I can see said mods?

No offense, but it sounds like you have too much time/money on your hands if you want to mod something that insignificant

I think it sounds cool, whats the point of having something if you cant mod it

word.

So far, I have modded my case, speakers, keyboard and my monitor is soon to come... ;)

Be sure to post pics if you ever try and do something! :)

I guess it'd be cool if you could do some nice painting. I can only do a solid coat, cause I'm not artisitc :)

Other than that, I'm not sure that you can do much to it. And I still wouldn't want to spend the money :(

Hey bobsaget posted here ;) my best mod of all time is thanks to him lol

I bet you could window mod the gameboy

I do have to admit, I would love to see a SP with a window in it. I think it would be difficult, but go for it!

Yeah, I was thinking of doing a window mod on it... but I'm unsure where. A window on the base would be kinda  but I don't think it would ever get seen by the casual eye, since it would be resting in my palm whilst I play. A window on the top of it, i.e. the back of the screen, would also be cool I thought, but I wonder if there would be anything exciting to look at behind it (like no PCB), or if it would screw with the side-lighting, and just blind people as they walk by  The only other thing I could window mod would be face with the buttons. I could replace that whole area with a window... that might be neat.

I did a little google work, and heard that one guy hacked up an old PS2 controller and used one of the analog sticks for the D-pad on the SP  I thought THAT sounded rad. He shortened it up a bit, of course, but I wonder if that could work. I think that the new PSP has an analog stick on it, but it's all nubby looking... there's not much space on the SP for anything other than a d-pad.

A rad paint scheme would be in order, of course, but I can think aobut what to paint later.

Hmmm... what else... I could sub out the buttons on it for something cooler, and custom made, maybe, but I'm not sure if I have that much ambition :p

I got it. I could mod an 70mm fan on to the back of the screen and tell everyone that I overclocked it to 2 GHz.

The most useful GBA mod I have seen is for the regular GBA. Soldering in some White LEDS to give the screen a backlight...been thinking about doing that myself. You have to be careful doing that though cause if you dont do it good you can really mess up the screen, although if you do it right it can sometimes look better than the SP.

Yeah, I heard they sold those "Afterburner" kits for the regular GBAa, but because gamepro ran and article on it, they got swamped with people wanting this installation instead of doing it them selves. Apparently, it was like 3 guys doing all the installations, so they got backed up by like three months because of un-[H]ard kids wanting to get their GBA lit but didn't want to screw anything up... then they released the SP  *suckers*

Besides, I have completed teh uber-mod. Behold.

Hmm, cooling the LCD screen eh? Shouldnt the HSF be on the processing half of the gameboy :p

I was thinking more of taking over the multiboot interface with a simple program (a 256k gameboy loader program) in combination with the correct drivers you could theoretically use it as a vfd type thing.. or you could buy a video input thing and connect your computer and use it as a backup screen.

But it would look far less cool than this pic. And besides, how would I hold it then? No, my friend, I'm afraid cooling the LCD screen is the only way to go here.

As for awdark's post, I have no idea what that first idea meant at all. The backup screen is kinda novel, but i want the gba itself to be showy, so people walk by and be like "wow, not only is that kid 1337/nerdy enough to be seen in public playing a gameboy, but he's also modded it. If this is the generation that will inherit the earth, we are doomed."
