Like it says. I'm poor, and dont think I can really afford both, without spending money I didn't want to. Should I finish a project that I have planned (and most of the components for), or rock out with HL:2? Just so you know, I'm planning on doing my mod over my month long Christmas break.

Edit: This mod is going to be solely for a media and music playing PC, that is going to be in the living room of my house, hooked up to an antique matched marantz tube radio set. It'll be a secondary rig, with nothing really fast. I got a really good deal on a 2.6C w/ HT, so I'm using that, (overkill, I know) but the only MB I have is an Intel made mATX i865 board with integrated graphics, so I'll be using that. It's not for gaming, by any means. If I am going to get HL:2, I'll be playing it on my signature rig.
 
Get HL2 now; ask for money to complete the mod for Christmas, if you won't be doing it `til break. :D
 
mod first because then you could play half life 2 on that of better specs then what you are using now I assume
 
Ask for HL2 for Christmas, and get the parts for the Mod now. Then when you get tired of working on the Mod you can play HL2.
 
so let me get this straight, you are going to either spend money on a game that will give you days if not weeks of satisfaction, or spend money on a mod that will give you about 5 mins of satisfaction when you are done with it and it will look pretty.

I don't think that's just...
I just installed watercooling and I'm still marvelling at it after 3 months...
Doom3 was neat for a month...
But I still open my case up and just marvel.

I say finish mod, then go for HL2.
Enjoy it over the holidays, knowing you have a break and youre playing it on a righteous system.
 
First off: Are you doing the mod for yourself or for other people's praise? Because when it comes down to it praise is nice but it is not tangible (unless you include winning case mod contests).

Secondly, if you aren't going to increase your system specs, then modding won't really matter on your performance unless you are trying to watercool an overclocked CPU. Looks don't = performance.

Third: Are you really going to have time to play the game between now and your break? Modding can be done in small increments of time where gaming can takes whole weeks from your life.

Lastly, what does your pocketbook tell you? I wish I would have waited on Doom3 because I paid waaaay too much for it the first week it came out. I played it for about 2 days and then it got shelved until I can find morte time or interest. I could have saved myself at least $20 waiting until now to purchase the game.


Let us know how when you get your mods done, we all like eye candy!

You're poor? And you're building a second PC for your living room? And you have a rig that is presumably good enough to run HL2?

just look at how long it took Halo to go down in price (Xbox version, not PC) :D
 
Yes wood, I myself am relatively poor. These would not be parent funded purchases. I'm in college full time, I'm not getting any financial aid, and so my liquid assets are somewhat laughable. I need someway to keep myself busy for a month over the holidays, and I'm willing to spend some of my own cash so that I'll have something to do. My parents paid for the rig in my signature, and if I'm lucky I'll sell the Modded PC I'm building either to my parents or anyone else who would want it.

P.S. In case anyone is interested, this is what I'm planning on putting the PC into.

I know people (like mashie) have done radio mods before, but it seems that most have them have been pretty small. If you look, there is a turntable right below the tube radio chassis, attached to a door, which pivots out of the front. Oddly enough, this turntable is almost exactly the same size as a 15 inch LCD monitor. Coincidence? I think not.

And sorry if I sounded mean. It just struck me as odd, is all. I'll be in college next year, so I guess I should reserve judgement until I've been there :eek:

It sounds like you've got the mod all scoped out and ready to go. I would probably say mod, because you sound more eager to do that, and have the idea there and materials ready to buy. Besides, modding = moar pics for the [H]!
 
Theres a turntable in it because it was built that way ;) . But really, it's probably just because this at some point served as the total entertainment center for someones house in the, um, 30's. Thats pretty technologically advanced. Uber 30's l33t if you will. In any case, because it's hidden most of the time behind a sliding door, I can replace it with a monitor, and possibly the tuner dial with a small LCD, so that it would be relatively stealthed, and look like nothing more than an antique radio to anyone who didn't know about it. That way it'll match most of the furniture in my house. I'm also thinking about putting a set ot speakers behind the cloth grill and making the entire thing self contained.
 
that thing will look awesome once it's done...

maybe u should work on the case mod cause... well... i'm anxious to see it :D
