Mobo shorting

Just wondering if there would be any visual signs that the motherboard was shorted. It would make sense that there would be, but I was just wondering if that's a sure way to tell if it's been shorted. Thanks.

maybe some popped solder on the back (as i recall you mounted your mobo without spacers)... but odds are you'd never be able to pick out where it was shorted... occasionally you can see some small burn marks around solder as well, but i doubt you could see it visually in your case...

Update on my situation:

It struck me today before I left for work that maybe I should plug in some speakers or something to see if the audio messages come up (Asus SK8V mobo). So I plugged them in while I had the mobo outside the case with the HSF on and just the power plugged in... and sure enough I get a "System failed cpu test" message. I'm not sure why it's failing the cpu test... but I guess I'd better start there.

Edit: And thanks again, Karma. There's no visual sign of any damage to the mobo... but I want to check everything out.

2nd Edit: I took the cpu out of the mobo... and when I tried to put it back in I realized that it doesn't go in all the way. The backside of it stays out of the slot... as if it doesn't fit into the motherboard. However, there are no bent pins and everything is aligned the way it should be aligned. I'm confused now... can anyone help me?

did you lift the little bar on the side of the slot to put the processor in? or did you just put it down on top of the slot without using that little lever at all?

I lifted the lever. This is really eating away at me, especially since I have to leave for more work in 45 minutes.

what proc and mobo is it?...

i dunno why that would be happening... it's weird that it would go in at all if not all the way... did you check to make sure the pin holes are all clear on the slot?... perhaps something small fell in one?...

that's a really bizzare problem to have it not slide in all the way...

idiot question to ask, but did you put the lever back down and secure it all the way ... i don't mean to make you seem stupid, nor ask stupid questions... just trying to cover all the bases...

Don't worry, I make myself feel like an idiot enough so I don't take your posts offensively. Trust me, I'm thankful at least someone is responding. The mobo is an Asus SK8V mobo, 940-pin and the processor is an Athlon64 FX-53 940-pin. In fact I was bored so I counted the pins and the holes to make sure there were 940 of them... sure enough there were. I tried what you said but it didn't work. I think there might be one bent pin. Can I bend it back or should I just give up and throw all my computer parts out the window?

Pin doesn't seem to be bent... when I put the chip in this time I lowered it flatly and it went in...but I thought it should be easier than that. Still says system failed cpu test. Idk what's going on.
