I know temp issues are a real problem these days, but does any1 have an opinion as to which temperature is closer to the real thing?

Q9450 at stock with tuniq 120
room temp is 26-28C

abit utility (up to date) reads 40C
Realtemp reads 48C

i feel like both are higher than expected and used AS5 and followed their instructions on the application.

p.s. while running prime the temps seem to move instantly from their idle to +5 and back to idle while still stressing.

I'm torn on this issue.
I find that for lower temps anywhere near idle, Realtemp loses its resolution and appears to stick at quite a high temp.

The motherboard util (Easytune 5 Pro) has registered CPU temps down to 22C while underclocked with lowered voltage on my E8400. The temp was almost correct, within 2C.
Realtemp wont show me temps below 42C and mostly sits at 43C until temps rise.

I know my idle temp is nowhere near 43C (it is 36C or less running at 4.1GHz, 1.4V fyi), so for idle temps, Realtemp is unusable.
However once temps start to rise above 60C, it is acknowledged the reported temps on 45nM chips are closer to the mark.
I find a 4C discrepancy between Realtemp and Easytune at 60C, Easytune reporting the lower.
In theory, by the time TjMax is reached both will report the same as they are required to by design.

Reported idle temps with any util cannot be trusted unless individually calibrated because the chips temp sensors are only calibrated by Intel to report the correct temperature when they get hot enough to throttle at TjMax.

What do you think about the temps shifting up and down 5C every second with no in between movement?

how about under load being at 60C, and only 4 seconds after stopping prime95 the temps are back to idle?

A lot of 45nm chips have on die temperature sensors that can only go so low. Many will stick and not go any lower than the low 40C range like you found MirageMobile. Motherboard utilities that read the CPU diode are reading a totally different sensor than what RealTemp reads. If the sensor is properly calibrated then you can get some decent temps from these but many are not calibrated that well and can change from one bios version to the next.

Temps going up or down 5C in one second is not unusual. Depending on your cooling I've recorded temp jumps and falls of 20C in one second. You need to keep in mind the large number of amps being applied to a tiny piece of silicon. If it wasn't for the IHS and heatsink, the jump in temps would be far greater than that.

If your sensors are not sticking or otherwise screwed up, I would definitely trust what RealTemp is telling you above 60C. These sensors have been individually calibrated and were designed to be very accurate at higher temperatures. I can't say the same for some of the other temp readings.
