Just curious if anyone has built any ESXi systems using a Phenom II Black Edition compatible mobo. I've found some fairly inexpensive mobos for the chip to get my started. Was just curious if there's a certain type of chipsets that work better with ESXi. Nvidia vs AMD seem to be prevalent on the sub 100 dollar mobo side.

Just be aware I'm on a very limited budget and this is my first build. I'm not expecting to run more then 3-4 VMs concurrently although wouldn't mind (1 per core essentially). I'm just kinda looking to lean on others who may have started out in the same boat using non-server hardware to start out with.
 
I briefly used both an MSI 785GM-E51 and a Biostar TA890FXE (IOMMU support). I think I had to inject drivers for them for the Realtek NICs in them, but I don't think that should be an issue with ESXi5 as I think that now supports Realtek NICs (I was using ESXi 4.1 at the time).
 
I've been running ESXi 5.0 on a Biostar TA790GX A3+ for some months now. Only using the built in Realtek NIC and it's been fine.
