Now that my favorite mobo the Abit IP35-E is no longer being made I had to find something else.

I came across this gem:

69.99, 1600FSB, Dual Channel Memory (Researched it on Asus's forum) Suggested 1066 memory (to pair with the 1600FSB.

For $70 its hard not like it. I will post results.

Anyone else have some good gems out there for my future builds?

Oh and this is going to be my first Diskless client. I'm going to swap a HD in to OC and then out it comes and will be USB and CD only with one of the pre made CD's like what is it Nofreds?

I figured I'd try something new. I eventually want to run it headless as well!

Thus being able to save the cost of video cards.. which I have bought about 125 bucks worth

From what I understand......

The G31 is a P31 with gfx attached

I have not had as much luck with my P31 as my P35's (there are not as many memory modes, laking a 1:1)

Also.... If your going to run headless you not need video

You can buy refurbed IP35's on the net, just got one from ebay for $60 shipped, and it's folding my newest Quad

Ok I got the ASUS P5KPL-CM installed last night and for the life of me I could not get it stable at 1600FSB as is advertised on the front of the box. Now I might try disabling the on board video and using a PCI-E vid card. The thing that I noticed most odd about this mobo is the craptastic bios... and the fact that no updates exist for the bios. It is stable at about 3.1Ghz atm, while not bad an additional 500mhz is nothing to sneeze at!

So onward to more experimenting. The voltage setting are non existent and have really weird names like:

1. 1.8v Dual over voltage with options of Auto 1.8v 2.0v adn 2.25v (I'm guessing DDR2 voltage?)
2. 1.5v over voltage options of Auto 1.5v and 1.6v (I'm guessing PCI-E voltage?)
3. VTT_CPU Over Voltage option of Auto 1.2 and 1.3v (I'm guessing CPU Core Voltage?)
4. 1.25v Over Voltage options of Auto 1.25v 1.4v (I'm guessing NB voltage?)

So I'm thinking max 3 and 4 and hope for the best? I know my mem is good at 1.8v for option #1 so I should just select it and #2 it doesn't matter currently not running any pci-e.

I'll let you know if I have any success. The limitation on the overclocking of the CPU is concerning!

you know that chip will do more in another board right?

I got another board after my IP35-E and was not impressed....

If I upgrade I'll hunt them down on Ebay before I get anything else.

I had it under my water cooled setup at 3.6ghz at 1.55v in bios 1.45 v vcore and it was stable

Yes, this is precisely why I'm hesitant to buy a cheap board. The IP35-E is the only exception and it's the best value for the price.

Currently, my 3 folding boxes have a EVGA 650i Ultra (B Stock for 59$), Abit IP35-E that I bought used for 80$ shipped from the FS/FT and a Asus P5K-E/wifi-AP (it's a RMA return that I didn't need for my main PC, having bought a Maximus Formula in the meanwhile). I will do experimentations with all 3 to see how they behave with quads (the P5K-E is a sure bet but it cost 150$ unfortunately). Last evening, I brought a new box online with a Q6600 and P5K-E and today, I will pick a package containing another Q6600 to be put in the 650i Ultra.

I will still need to buy a extra motherboard and I'm eyeing a Asus P5E-VM for my HTPC box. They clock very very well with a 45nm quad and I might put my Q9450 there so I can run at 3.8 GHz on air !

I have this Mobo and have been testing it for the last couple of weeks. NOW it is a great buy for $70. I bought mine for $110.

It has been running a Q6600 on 3.2ghz 24/7 (on air). It hasnt missed a beat. The only problem was resolved with an updated bios flash when I just built it.

My other tried and true 24/7 folding board is the Gigabyte GA-31M-S2L. I have 4 of these now and they have been a Gem clocking my Quads to 3.3ghz (on air.)

Which mobo are you talking about doing a bios flas to? Becuase I went to ASUS's website and it said 1 bios and it was Initial shipped, which to me meant I didn't need to update my bios... I'll have to look at it again. I also may need to bump my memory to 1066 to achieve higher FSB since the mobo does not appear to like to run 1:1... Anyways more experimenting to come!

I have the Gigabyte P965-DS3 which has been a real stable board, and the P35 DS3L which has been a pretty good board for the price.

I really think that 965 was the best deal for folding I've gotten, but it seems to be gone.
The P35 is less than 80 bucks if you look around, a pretty good OCer.

Ahh... like usual , I'm a little late to the party. I was wondering if I was lucky enough to get a good OC'ing chip in a Q6600 cpu (after the price drops) would I be better off getting the IP35-E mobo from Ebay (new or the reconditioned ones?) or another type of mobo from an online retailer like Newegg, etc because I've read where the IP35-E mobo was discontinued ?

Please keep in mind this will pretty much be a dedicated 24/7 folder. ATM, with a E6420, I'm folding with 2x E6600's (about a 160 watts at the wall per E6600 boxen, both WC'ed) and I was wondering if I replaced 1x E6600 chip with a Q6600 chip if I wouldn't be able to almost double my ppd compared to the present E6600 chip for only a little increase in electrical draw? (who knows, I might be able to swing 2x quads if this is the case, I'm tryin' to save $ supporting my local power company)

I'd like to OC' the quad 3.0 GHz or better and put it under water. I've been very satisfied with my E6600's and I was patiently waiting on the penryns before upgrading them (so far I haven't been that impressed ) There's no way I have enough patients to wait on the Nehalem chip.

Hey nitteo what memory are you running in that Gigabyte board?

I am running Corsair PC2-6400s at 810mhz. I dont OC my RAM because SMP is more CPU dependent and most of the time RAM OCing is the most unstable component.

As for the bios question, it was the Asus P5KPL board. I just took the most recent one on tthe site...

For a Q6600 @ 3.0, most of us are just doing air. The cost of water for a dedicated folder just isn't really worth it. Depending on the cooler, you can hit 3.4 to 3.6 without much issue.

Beyond 3.6 only a handful of air solutions will work and still keep your temps reasonable. The TRUE120 is probably the best bet for that.

Yeah, I've always (at least the last few years) had top flight cutting edge HSF's. If I hadn't liked WC'ing so much I'd have a TRUE 120 or two by now (I've read some good reports on the XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 HSF). I quit air coolin' when the TT Big Typhoon, Tuniq Tower and the Zallman 9700 were the top flight cutting edge HSF's (I have 2x Zallman 9700's, 1x TT Big Typhoon and 1x Tuniq Tower. (although I have used the fan, back up plate and speed controller for something else.)

ATM I have 2x MCP350's, 2x MCR220's, 2x Micro reservoirs, 2x "bowed" Apogee GT's and it's all tied up with 3/8" tube on 2x E6600 boxen. I've been thinking serious about getting another MCP655 and trying my hand at using 1/2 tubes or maybe for the time bein', just switch out 1x E6600 to the boxen with my E6420 and use the E6420 in an "el cheapo" mobo on the floor (put the quad in the WC'ed E6600's place, both my WC'ers have G33 mobos). I wasn't particularly worried about temps. I'll probably get a D-tech FuZion (with jets) or whatever WB seems the best on a Q6600 ATM , but only if the Apogee GT's can't do 24/7 folding' (I do like the Apogee GT's )

I also have a modified Nautilus 500 rig lying around here (I got it on Ebay by mistake), so who knows? The reason I modified it was I couldn't live with the pump being upside down and it having an aluminum rad. I even have a KOOLANCE CPU-300 cpu WB with 1/4" barbs sitting way back in the closet somewhere.( /hides his face in shame )

I'm in no way ignoring cost, but like water cooling sometimes the best is more expensive, but in the long run it's more cost effective (bang for the buck) to get the best you can afford. Only my opinion

I'm looking to go WC this summer with my main rig. But for the most part, still air. As for the Xigmatech cooler, yes I too have heard a lot about it. I plan to use the S1283 for all of my future builds. I won't be shooting for 3.6 for every boxen (would be nice, but not realistic) and the Xigmatec does just fine.

As others have stated, the IP35-E has been purchased without issue from E-Bay and others. I myself may look at these.

My main pc is watercooled to the extreme (spent about 800$ on parts ) but the rest of my home farm is air cooled. I don't see how effective it is to get 3.6-3.8 with 200$ of watercooling gear vs 3.4-3.6 GHz with a nice heatsink. I just ordered 2 Thermalright Ultima-90, which is sufficient to cool a quad to 3.2-3.2 GHz.

I've already modded a Antec 900 for WC'ing (what a freakin' job) Now I almost wish I hadn't because IMO it's one of the best air cooler cases goin' (mucho fans )

If, by chance, I should forgo the expense, the hassle, the joys, the tweak a dees and IMO better lookin' appearence (with a side winder) of WC'ing what case and HSF would you recommend for a Q6600, folding 24/7 in an enviornment of about 21c degrees ambient?

Well, if you already got the parts, modded the case then you are seriously hit by the WC bug I believe that a watercooled folding box is a dream world but the expense is what kill the deal.

Brotherman (Xilikon), you ain't just a' lyin' there. That freakin' WC'ing bug has big chompers and to appease him/her (can't tell the sex of bugs) it takes mucho denaro ($).

And what you said IMO is sometimes unfortunately true, a WC'ing box is a dream except when it leaks and then it becomes a wet dream of massive proportion.
