Mobility Radeon X1400

I have a Mobility Radeon X1400 in my laptop. It has 256mb of memory. It is a PCI Express card. I have 1gb of ram. Duo core processore both 1.66ghz.

When I play video games the card works fine until I put the graphics as high as they will go. Like on Deer Hunter 2005. It will work on all the way up graphics but the framrate is slow. That game is not a high end game. It should play like nothing on the graphics all the way up. Also FlatOut 2 does it even worse when the graphics are up all the way. That game doesn't seem to high end either. And on Chess Titans for Windows Vista. I put the smooth edges setting on and it starts to lag. Thats stupid. That game takes nothing to play. Also the WIndows Vista test that test your computer. The graphics performance was my lowest score. I got a 3.6. Shouldn't my graphics card be alot better than this.
 
The X1400 uses Hypermemory, which is ATI's fancy term for "uses system memory as graphics memory". Your "256MB" video chipset is actually 128MB, and it takes 128MB from the main system RAM. Vista has a hard enough time in 1GB, but now you're taking 128MB extra of that.

The X1400 is a low-mid range chipset. It's not expected to be particularly fast.
 
So should I get a different video card. I have a Dell Inspiron 6400. Or can I even get a different one.

while ram size could be an issue, keep in mind hypermemory also takes a bite out of your memory bandwidth, this could be a bigger problem then the 128 mb system memory it eats up

it might be possible to disable the hypermemory function though
 
Does anyone know how to disable hypermemory if you can. I looked in the ATI Catalyst Control Center and it didn't say anything about disabling it. This is what it says for the hardware.

my lappy has an x200, which is all shared memory, i can adjust the memory size in the control center

set the view to advanced, standard view hides all the good stuff, then hunt around if you see hypermemory somewhere, if you cant totally disable it, try setting it to the smallest possible size
 
I too would like to know how to disable the hypermemory. Additionally, would there be any performance increase by getting ddr667 over my current ddr533
 
i was under the impression that hypermemory didn't work if your system ram was all used up?

also going from 533mhz ram to 667mhz ram won't show much of a performance gain
 
sometimes through the bios (SOMETIMES) it can let you either change how much RAM it uses or turn it off if it has some dedicated memory
 
Anybody ever come across a way of disabling HyperMemory?

I have recently purchased an ATI (HIS brand) X1300 PCIe X1 card to use in a server system. There is a jumper on the actual video card board (Jumper JU2 to be specific) and I am curious if it disables the HyperMemory function. Thus far, HIS hasn't been quick to respond to my inquiries on the function of this jumper.

Any thoughts??
 
You realize that 'Hypermemory' using cards or chips never have more than 64mb on-board, and pretty frequently have none at all?

IE., if you COULD disable it, it would turn your computer into a paperweight. With no video memory, it cannot generate any video output. The *bare minimum* for a 1280x1024 32-bit display is about 40mb...just to display the desktop (1280 pixels by 1024 pixels by 32 bits-per-pixel).
 
That is not true for all cards. The HIS brand ATI X1300 I have recently purchased does indeed have 128MB dedicated onboard VRAM. The 128MB is 64bit DDR2 memory running at 500Mhz.

If I can find a way to disable the HyperMemory I would be happy with the card for the application I will be using it for. I am never going to need more than 64MB of VRAM, much less 128MB for a simple server-based video card.

I am hoping that the jumper on the card will have something to do with disabling the HyperMemory. I have yet to confirm this yet. Any thoughts on that?

The JU2 jumper on the card is for NTSC/PAL settings if the card is being used under DOS or some other non-driver OS. And the server I put the X1300 in has over 2GB of memory, of which the HM function on the X1300 has not needed to use any of. All is well thanks to the onboard 128MB VRAM and this PCIe 1X type card!

Thanks for the info! I wish their was some way, however, to simply 'disable' the HM function on those cards. But, it appears that HM is either part of the cards BIOS or inherent in the X1300 core design. Obviously, I do not know for sure. Oh well. Thanks again.
