mobile recording mic pre/input

I'm looking for a good mic pre for recording to my laptop (dell, 1.7ghz centrino, 1gb ram, 80gb hd, etc etc). I'm currently using adobe audition. right now im thinking to channels is all i'll need, as anything hard core (say 8+) will be handled by a DA-38 or two. This is just for the event that I'm out recording something less involving then a school choir or the like on the go. I'm attracted to the prospect of bus powering as I don't anticipate such recordings to last longer then an hour which is my crack dream for the dell with the 9 cell recording two channels of audio.

currently i'm looking at the sound devices USBpre as my main choice, and i'm wondering if anyone else has DIRECT experience with a mic pre that's usb or firewire, mobile setting is a plus.
