Microsoft has delayed the release of Office 2008 for Macs so they can work out the rest of the bugs.

"It really is just a quality issue across the board," Craig Eisler, general manager of Microsoft's Macintosh business unit, said in an interview Wednesday.

Seriously though, what the heck does 2008 do that the last version didn't do? Brainwash you? Change the icon set? Has the act of typing a letter or working with a spreadsheet changed? 'Cause honestly, that's all you would use of it. Apple already has a better presentation software than PPoint and built in email, and how many mac users are really into building databases? Google webapps ftw. ^_^

I happen to really like the Microsoft Office suite. As a current (unfortunately) grad student Microsoft OneNote is great as well as there other applications....

Word. (no pun intended)

Office 2003 is a fine suite. I don't plan on upgrading to 2007 anytime soon even though I got a copy free.

It doesn't matter much that Office 2008 is delayed for the Mac. The huge amount of belly aching will just start on release since it won't be macro compatible with Office 2007. MS must really want to kill it off on the Mac side.

macs would not exist in much of the business world without office

Office 2007 is great, but I have no clue why Microsoft wants to release another office just one year off, especially given that 2007 has not yet even penetrated the market. No one is going to care about 2008 -- I know I'm certainly not, unless they make some kind of feature breakthrough in the one year since Office 2007.

My bad. I thought Office 2008 would also be for PC in addition to Mac. Since it seems like it's not -- everything is fine and good. Anything related to Office 2007 for PC is a major step up from Office 2003.

Office 2004 for Mac has performance issues on the Intel Macs, 2008 is supposed to address these issues as well as provide a better integrated email client for exchange.

I thought it would be made to work on the x86 architecture macs instead of all the crap people are complaining about with software coded for PPC cpus not working well on the new intel macs.

I've run Office 2004 under Rosetta and it runs fine, even on single core Intel Macs.

Weird, a friend of mine constantly bitches about it on his macbook.

It's slow on my core duo 1.66 mini. Hopefully 2008 is out around the first of the year or else I'll be ditching the mac.

I would think they would bring Office 08 around maybe the same time as Leopard to sell them side by side. Though if the delay is for "problems" then MS will just wait until they feel things are fit and ready.

office 2004 is crap on OSX, period, you are a one in a million, it is coded for PPC, not intel, word takes for ever to open, not everything works properly, freqeunt crashe etc.

it was no diff then adobe cs2 running like shit, but CS3 was coded for x86 so now it is flawless.

Well, I can see why Microsoft would have problems when coding software for Macs. Since Mac is their number one competitor, they probably aren't devoting a large amount of resources to it.

To everyone who dislikes the changes in Office 2007: I would advise you try forcing yourself to use it for a few weeks to get used to the new interface. Once you learn it, you'll probably think it should have been that way all along. It's much easier to learn than 2003, also. Instead of forcing you to memorize the function of a hundred little icons, most buttons actually say what they do.

Office 2007 is not that much of a step up. In my opinion, it's only easier to use if you somehow had problems using every other version of Office. Really, the vast majority of what they did was make the menu items appear across the top instead of having them all contained in drop-down menus. Basically, if you haven't had problems using Office in the past, the changes are only going to annoy you.... like one entire "menu" devoted to what was formerly contained in page properties.

Anyways, I doubt Microsoft is devoting minimal resources to their Macintosh version. Just because they're competitors doesn't mean they're going to shoot themselves in the foot by not making software for the 5% of the population (or whatever low number). More copies of Office for Mac sold = more money for Microsoft and less money for Mac's document-software companies. Either way, Microsoft gains and Mac (to some degree) loses out with the offering.

open office is fine for you're everyday office stuff but once you start to get into complex things in spread sheets / Aceess databases and such, it simply cant compete.
