Anyone know where I could buy mesh made of metal, similar to the front of a speaker?
 
Check google for "modder's mesh". You might also find some at sites that carry "expanded metal".
 
If you need it for fan grilles, Coolerguys has mesh fan grilles like this. They're the only ones I've seen. I bought a 120mm one for the blowhole project for my new case.

P.S. They come in several colors too. :)
 
And are easily paintable.

I painted mine from stainless steel to red.
Kinda hard to see in this pic, but you get the idea. There's red behind the motherboard, red to make the PSU cover, and a small black piece on the PSU as well.

ask mashie where he got his expanded steel mesh for his doom 3 mod... that's what you are talking about.
